Alritey, I built the board and have enough given it a folding mechanism and handles! The fact that it's all permanantely attached does mean it's a bit of a faff to set up with only one person though so might get rid of said fold...

Went with a mixture of standard DIY filler mixed with PVA, water and sand along with some burnt umber acrylic paint to act as a basecoat. After this it'll be painted burnt umber, drybrushed and then given a coat of army painter dip (unless someone can reccoment a cheaper alternative?). That coupled with the PVA should make it durable enough I hope.
Anti dice rolling 'sides' will be added that will also prevent minis falling off and make sure the table doesn't get knocked.
As the weeks progress I hope to be updating this blog with the sets of scenery that I'll be creating for the board; looking forwards to gaming at home again
