Don't see why you'd want to give up the D6 (average 3.5 hits, with a better basic to-hit rating) in exchange for 3-6 attacks on a 5+ (average 1-2 hits) from a template attack. I'd just blast away with 2x TK d6.

Question on the AMTL list: Why is the Melta Cannon better at long range than it is at short range, isn't that backwards to how it should be?

It keeps it as a viable option between the Lasburner and Plasma Cannon.

Nah you just give the Melta TK(d3) in firefight, so it sits in a different niche to the Lasburner (single powerful shot for killing WE's vs the Lasburner's mass killer), and drop the ranged attack down to a single TK(1) attack to balance.

IIRC the Lasburner should be more of a CC weapon than a FF weapon anyway, if you go back to Titan Legions?

There was no FF at all in the original Titan legions game, it was ranged shooting an CC.
It was agreed early in AMTL testing that it would be suited to FF (lasburner) as a very short ranged but powerful laser weapon.

Aye, I know; That's why "more of" rather than categorical "it was", I know there's space for interpretation.

I just get tweaked when "interpretation" ends up with backwards melta weapons. ;-p

If you wanted to justify in the fluff for the list mechanic you could say that the weapon is used to it's full potential in ranged attacks but restricted close in due the unfortunate backwash effect on the user.

You could then have a house rule of the Melta Cannon being able to give +2 FF attacks but for each miss/hit (delete as appropriate) the attacker suffers 1 TK hit itself.

If you felt you had to justify it that is ;)

My brain just exploded from how little that justification relates to "melta" weapons. :-)

Not unless you upgrade with a Vet Princeps.
