Going from the EpicUK lists, any comments on these three units?

Stompas seem to mainly be a super-stompa delivery unit. At 225pt for 3 stompas, they are expensive as an activation padder (compared to stormboyz at 150) AND incredibly easy to break - one kill breaks them.

I was considering:
3 Stompa + 4 Dreadnoughts + 1 Flakwagon = 225 + 175 = 400pt

But, for 475pt you get 3 stompas and a super-stompa... which is better. Admittedly, the former can garrison.

Kans are the lost unit in this trio, sometimes I've seen two added to a Warband in a Landa... but two extra boyz with two extra grots seems the better choice. Otherwise, they make a infantry formation mixed (with AP and AT targets), so the boyz+grot is preferred.




Thoughts? Example formations people have taken using these units (and what they were used for)?

I know an ork-playing friend of mine like to take a giant (6-8 sized) stompa mob and then garrison them quite far forward.

It represents such a massive threat that I have to deal with it somehow, allowing his other big nasties the freedom to close up unmolested.

He tends to pad the formation out with a mix of Kans / Dreadnaughts for hit allocation shenanigans too.

I bring stompa themed armies to EUK & other Epic tourneys every so often.

Basic stompas are broadly overpriced unless you're attaching supa stompas.
Dreadnoughts are overpriced (better to add flak), and kans are overpriced (better to add bitz + grots in almost every possible situation).

E&C is pretty much on the money.

In a game where speed and activation count are key, expensive walkers tend to suffer in comparison.

I disagree slightly on the flak comment though. I always add a flakwagon to a stompamob to lay the obligatory token blast marker, but after that I max on dreads. I find the better armour save and combat prowess (yes, yes, IF they get into combat...) more useful. In addition, if only 1 flakwagon is added they can still garrison.

I personally find it a bit sad - for me the slight of hordes of gargants/stompas/dreads engaging legions of titans/land raiders etc is one of the evocative sights in Epic. But almost every time I put a list together I feel like I'm taking a revolver to a gunfight with someone using an assault rifle.....

I was considering the possibility of taking four formations of 3 stompas (two with flakwagons) - garrison them all and run at the enemy on turn 1.

The problem is how easy a formation of 3 is to break... then, without being fearless, they'd just get 'plinked' to death.

The other problem with adding dreadnoughts, they only have 30cm range weapons... further crippling the longer ranged stompa guns (in terms of using the dreads as suppressed units).

To be fair, four stompas (all with 3 guns) can pump out a lot of shots... but at 300pts they just don't last long enough.

Ork and Marine walkers are woefully overpriced and I feel your pain. Generally speaking they're poo poo (a technical term) but especially so for Orks without many if any deep striking capabilities.

I would note that my "stompy horde" army list was meant to fix the problems with the AV/RA class walker army style, by granting a small points break and greater flexibility.

Yup. I like that list and have been gathering up the models to make it work in the hope that it does one day get revived :)

Only a few small tweaks needed to finalise it too.....
