Having only done smaller battles and some of the training games so far, this weekend we are going for our first 3K battles.

My opponent is fielding Eldar and I will use SM. I had intended to use Dark Angels (I have about half my SM painted) but he is fielding a Phantom Titan which worries me a bit. The rest of his army is mainly Guradians, Aspects etc so I am not that worried about that.

Any advice on the army I should field or indeed tactics for taking it down (I know its been discussed alot) My initial plan was to let my opponent have the initiative in turn 1, then when I get it back teleport in 2 x Terminator squads and CC the Phantom, just to get it out the way and get the BTS.

We have agreed on no aircraft as I have non except on Thawk, and I also have no AA.

If we have time we will also do a second battle IG V SM or Eldar as I have an IG army too.

Well you have two options: kill it or don't worry about it.

If it's a pulsar phantom it only gets 4 shots (plus the missile launcher, if he's in range). For 750 points, you have to think... so what? If it's shooting you then it probably isn't doing much with respect to to objectives, and it isn't a skimmer so line of sight is an issue for him. Think about how you can best make use of 750 points of your own. I'd be tempted to throw some cheap stuff in front of it to influence where it goes and what it attacks, but other than that exploit the hole left in the rest of his army selection. If he's biel tan and has aspects, it's quite possible he doesn't have too many activations. Which means you can keep your juicy targets until last and force his phantom to shoot a suboptimal target, and concentrate on neutralising his weaker activations.

Alternatively, what would it take to reliably kill it? Holofields mean 6 damage is about 18 MW hits or 27 regular hits on average. If you get a lucky early crit to take out its holofield it's probably worth sending in the terminators, but you're probably going to spend more points killing it than it is worth.

In general I would try to avoid allowing him the chance to dictate the terms of the battle, which allowing him free reign in turn 1 might do. I mostly play as Eldar. Generally when I get to dictate such things I win, and if my opponent stops me fighting on my own turns I lose.

Interesting info, thanks very much. I guess going for the Titan is more a glory thing! Get the BTS victory point

Your plan for teleporting in terminators isn't quite right.

Teleporting happens at the start of a turn, before rolling for initiative. If you teleported in at the start of turn 1, won the initiative, then gave it to your Eldar opponent, then he would be able to activate his Titan and get out of harm's way before your terminators hit him.

I would suggest teleporting in on turn 2, that way at the start of the turn his forces are more spread out and you are more likely to be able to hit his Titan with your terminators and not have to deal with too much enemy supporting fire.

Alternatively, you could have your terminators loaded up in your Thawk at the start of the game and land them in at the end of turn 1 to hit the Titan or whatever you can (hopefully by the end of turn 1 the tian is in a good position to hit), then immediately activate them again at the start of turn 2 to mess up whatever else is nearby. Gives your terminators an extra turn to do damage.
