Hey

I have a question about the mechanics of an assault, one that has been bothering me for a while but I have not been able to find an answer; maybe you gents can help me.

Let's say a SM terminator unit is in an assault with another unit. They have managed to get all their bases into base contact with units of the enemy formation. So in resolving the assault they use their CC stat to work out whether they hit or not, that part I understand, but:

1. If all the units they were in contact with dies from their first attack, do the terminators MW attacks just go to waste? As I presume from the rules that they can only hit units within the attacks range (base contact in this case)

2. Another problem I have is, are CC and FF attacks pooled together to make a generic hit pile when working out who gets hit? So that units with more than one attack in CC get to allocate their hits to any other unit, that maybe is not in base contact?

If anyone has any answers it would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Scotty

Answering them in reverse
2. You are correct; all CC and FF hits are pooled, and the defender then allocates the hits 'front to back' placing one hit (per DC) on each unit, starting with the nearest to the enemy. Assaults are dynamic in nature and E:A abstracts the effects of swords, knoves, small arms and other weaponry in this fashion. (It can help to consider a single assault as encompassing an entire WH40K 'battle')

1. No; MW (and TK) hits are managed separately after all the AP/AV hits are resolved, so these hits can end up being alocated to units that have survived the 'normal' hits.

Thanks for the quick reply Ginger, the FF and CC aspect I have down now.

So in regards to the MW attacks, they take place after the other attacks have been resolved, but what if there is no one in range?

Looking at the example in my first post, what if all the enemy units in base contact with the terminators are killed in the intitial CC and FF? Do the macro weapon attacks get allocated to units not in BTB contact or are they wasted?

In the MW attack resolution attacks get pooled just like regular attacks. So you may end up with a MWCC attack hitting a unit not in BtB with the originating unit. Conceptually, you can think of this as your MWCC armed unit sweeping forward to strike the next target in the heat of battle.

Think about it like this: you work out all the dice you are going to roll at the beginning. Then you roll to hit, allocate and make saves for all the regular (i.e. non-MW) attacks. Then you do the same for the MW. Each time, the defender allocates hits first against units in base contact, then to the nearest units within range and line of fire.

This can mean CC hits end up being allocated to units that are not in base contact, but you never "lose" attacks unless everything within range and line of fire is already dead. The exception to this is First Strike hits, which your opponent may allocate in such a way that your CC units are no longer in base contact.
