I always took the Birthday rule as more of an attempt to help you get to know your opponent. Kind of a tip of the hat towards "it's a game, don't take it too seriously, you're playing against another person and should be having fun with this".

This basically! It's like a pleasant reminder to just enjoy the game.

(pre-measure :))

I've played games where the the initial initiative test was settled by the birthday rule...a good laugh before the game begins shouldn't be discounted :)

Hmm... now I feel like such a noob.

We have been using this birthday rule.

If you discount this rule then what value do other rules in the book have?

I think that's part of the point - it's just a game. It's just made up rules. Change them if you like.

As much value as you want to attribute to them. It's your game so play it how your group wants. Just don't expect that everyone here will agree with you.

For reference its common for people to re-roll such things at UK tournaments, though I have played by the birthday rule on more than one occasion at events :)

Oh yeah my WAAC tendancies have often seen me up amongst the Epic elite lol...But fair warning if we play at FSA I'm settling it all on the Birtday rule ::)

pre measuring has it's advantages and disadvantages - you know the exact distance, and can avoid flak etc, but it tends to give away what you're planning (unless you bluff and start measuring random things)

Well I personally don't like pre-measuring. But because my comrades prefer pre-measuring I've not played without until now.

I spent several years without pre-measuring, when the rules forbade it, and I enjoyed the sense of uncertainty it added. Usually I was pretty good at judging distances, but at nervous moments in a tight battle you could start to doubt yourself if it was *really* critical that you be in range, or out of someone's range, or able to shoot *and* hold an objective.

The range-finder thing never bothered me; mostly because the uncertainty added to my fun. (And fluff could justify it. Yes, rangefinders should be simple tech for this advanced civilization. However so should be turning an ignition key, and they can't do that without incense, three prayers, and two dousings of holy oil....... followed by a swift kick when the engine still won't turn over)

I still would prefer not to pre-measure, but the rules have changed with the editions and opponents seem to like allowing it. So these days I do.
