What was the idea behind giving the Lictor sniper in the first place?

To enable it to apply a -1 armour save to whatever unit was in b2b with it, and choose which unit that was in the case of multiple units in b2b, as everyone involved in the relevant debate agreed that Sniper CC attacks wouldn't travel outwards like other CC attacks.

The hit must be allocated on a unit in range of the sniper unit, so a unit with only CC sniper weapons like the lictor should only be able to apply it in base contact.

There is a nominal range listed on the weapon stat lines. However, the allocation rules for assaults do not apply that as a range limitation. It seems odd to me to do it in this case.

Obviously, there is a precedent with WEs, but that doesn't seem especially appropriate here.

Yes, exactly.

Hi Guys

My original question was related to Space Marine Scouts and the Sniper upgrade.

In that particular case I am guessing they have sniper ability on all weapons (no distinction between CC and FF weapons) so they roll as per normal in an assault, but I get to allocate their hits? Regardless of whether they are in CC or FF (since CC and FF only drive to hit statistics, not hit allocation).

Thanks

The army lists states
Quote:
Snipe - One Scout unit may be given the Sniper ability

I'd take this to mean that it effectively gets added to one units notes. Using the FAQ posted above then it only gets sniper in shooting, not assaults.

If you're saying that CC hits can only be applied to units in base to base then units would also lose any EA attacks if they're initial target is killed.

The sniper rules don't use the normal hit allocation rules, so the normal rules for CC hits spreading are moot.

I quite agree with this.

Sniper attacks are an exception to the normal allocation rules in shooting, they certainly can't be "stretched" like other shooting attacks can be, so I don't see why that range limitation wouldn't also apply in close-combat; it's a separate pool of hits allocated in their own way.

I know the intention of giving Lictors sniper on CC attacks is that such hits would be allocated to targets in base contact with the Lictor, as the Tyranid player desired... no "flying flesh hooks" or such was intended.

If adding a new special rule (in this case CC sniper) causes confusion, probably best not to do it eh? Or at least call it something else: "Assassin"?

The problem I have with allowing CC sniper to be put on any unit within 15cm and LoS is that commanders can still be targeted despite being completely surrounded with friendly troops (and thus unabled to be based by the Lictor). Additionally, they can be targeted as if they were in base-to-base but get none of their CC extra attacks.

Isn't that the point of using a Sniper?? Strike without being stuck or striking a place that normally couldn't be struck?

Call me Crazy then... ::)
