Thanks! Yeah I've tried dullcote, it usually gives the best results but till leaves a decent shine. :(

Great painting Vaaish & the banners are really exceptional!

Do you own an airbrush? There are quite a few options for matte/flat finishes if you do.
I like Krylon Matte, but it's a flat to satin finish. I always thought super flat metallics just looked wrong and the Krylon Matte lets the metal shine through.

I don't one an airbrush yet. We learned how to use them in college, but I haven't touched one since. I've been seeing a lot of higher level painters using airbrushes for zenital highlighting and blocking in color so it's on my list of things I need to pick up at some point. I've been using Krylon Matte, but it's really finiky as you can see in the photos of the tacticals. What I've been aiming for is a completely matte finish over the model that I can go over with brush on gloss to pull up the luster of the metals.

Mr vaaish, do you drybrush your weathering on the mini's legs and treads to add dirt? Or is it another item you use to get that affect? Amazing painting btw.

Thanks! Blind:What picture are you referring to? I've used several techniques over the course of the thread and it'll be easier to explain if I know what you are looking at :)

Well oddly enough i decided to start from the beggining of your thread so i could drool over everything again as i get inspiration for my upcoming SM army. I guess i would be refering to the imperial fists at the beggining. Also your paint chipping and grime looks very interesting as well.

Thx,

ah way back there then :) those were basically using an old brush to stipple similar to a sponging effect. IIRC I just used boltgun for the chips. For the mud it was scorched brown with a second layer using graveyard earth.

You don't steeple/sponge black paint on? then fill in with boltgun to give that double effect of primer inbetween the metal below?

Also your Blood ravens are fantastic sir, i would really love to know how you did the highlights on the troops and vehicles.

nope, at epic scale that transition wouldn't be visible. Even at 40k scale the effect makes paint look much too thick. Maybe at inquisitor scale you'd get something around a thick coat of paint it would work at. The blood ravens are pretty simple, just a mix of blood red and white for the first layer of highlights with a touch of white at the points.

So do you use a base of red and then use a wash to hit the cracks? then drybrush more of the same red on top? then use the red/white mix then the white? Thats what i think i'm going to be trying coming up on some mini's im going to be working on. Also how much white do you add to the read i think to much would come across pink?

Thx for letting me pick your brain btw!

For these, yes. White primer, scab red coat, drybrush white, drybrush blood red, a coat or two of delvan mud to tone the color and shade things, last drybrush of scab red, use black to hit some shadows for pop, hit highlights with 50/50 red white mix, hit points with pure white for extra pop.

It does come across pink, but the pure white highlight tricks the eye and makes it look red with a highlight rather than pink. THe other thing is the last two highlight layers aren't drybrushes, they are blended in with a fine brush. If you don't want pink highlights mix blazing orange with white for the hightlight and then go to white.

Is the drybrush white put in to make the blood red really pop out?

Thanks for the info i'm probably going to give this a shot soon.

It does help it pop, but not so much as you'd think. Blood Red is pretty transparent when ti goes on so giving the white undertone helps it come out a solid red color rather than a more brownish color.
