The SG homepage needs some work too imo. (galleries?!). It also needs more traffic for other sg games then bfg/warmaster.

The SG section wil become its own microsite. It wont be integrated with the main site - so you will need to log in seperately, but it will be expanded. Each game will have its own section, with resources, links, etc. Past GothiComp galleries and Warp Rift will be moved to the BFG section, for example.

I do plan on expanding all the sections of the SG forum as well. BFG will be first, as there is material and structure already in place, but others will follow - although I will need to rely more heavily on the various game communities for ideas and content. The aim is to make www.sg.tacticalwargames.net the 'new SG website' in the near future.

As for increasing traffic, when the structure and minimal content is in place, I would be open to ideas and suggestions on this.

No, please not. I shiver at such things. It takes away time from the forums, is mostly used for nonsense and thus people are being less productive in doing what they are supposed to, which is ehm... not chatting.
It is a board killer.

While a little gimmicky, and not entirely my thing, I will most likely be adding a chat channel. I have investigated two broad options already. The first is a chat system run through the main web site, but not the forums here - although since it is now a single login, that shouldnt be a huge problem. The second is an addon toolbar to the site, which would give access to a chat channel through either Facebook or other methods. I will look into this further, as I do think that there are times when these could be very useful. However, I would have to set down guidelines as while development is often easier through this method, no final decisions on development should be made through chat.

EDIT: My big concern, and something that will probably influence things, is whether the chat system slows down the site at all, as that is something that I want to avoid at all costs.

most places i have been to with chat integration have an IRC channel on whatever server, and an application which puts a link to the channel, and an update as to how many users are online at the time, on the main page. there is often an add-on that lets you use a psuedo IRC client via the website. if its just a link and the notification app, it shouldnt have any impact on the sites performance at all. i suppose the client part may impact on it if enough people used it, but thats unlikely (i personally would be re-installing mirc or something, rather than using a web-based client anyway)

I've been away for the best part of a year, and reading through all of that has left me more confused than anything else. What's the current thinking? Are there still going to be three boards, or will this one just be streamlined?

From where I'm sitting, I agree that the board as it stands is trying to do too much, but I'm not exactly sure what would happen if you were to split up the Epic element. What I mean by this is that if this board were to become an exclusive NetEA board used for development, what would happen to the discussion boards for those of us who still play the second edition version of Space Marine and/or Titan Legions? What would happen to discussion of Epic 40K? What would happen to boards discussing Epic EA as modified by GW (i.e. official FAQ and errata only).

Would these have boards here, on the SG board, or on the third board which, as far as I can see, doesn't exist yet?

My personal preference, if there is to be a split, would be to leave all of this board to those who want to develop the game, and move to have all those who want to play older versions or the 'undeveloped' version of the game to this new third board, but I have a feeling that this is not what you intend to use the third board for.

While we're on the subject of changes, is there any intention to fix the star and ranking system that used to be in place before this board was moved from the old forum software? Also, if a third board is to be created, could I recommend using SMF to you. It's a far better forum software than phpBB in my opinion, both from the point of view of administration and as a regular user. SG uses it, although I don't like the way they've organised the site, as disabling post count and ranks is just completely unnecessary in my opinion.

Overall, some clarity of what the current thinking is for someone who hasn't been here in a while, and who would actually like to find a way to be more involved with the community would be appreciated, as I simply don't play EA enough to be able to get involved with all the development discussions and detailed tactical threads, and it would be nice to be able to contribute in some way .

I expect that this sounds a lot more complicated than it really is.

The main site will deal with more general army scale games, with Epic as one of these. It will contain blogs, resources, etc.

The SG section and forum will remain unchanged at this point. It will evolve and expand in the future to provide areas for each game, but will remain as it now for a while first.

These boards will be reorganised. Instead of the three sections that we had initially - wargames, epic and bfg - we will have two sections - army scale games and epic development. Epic will also have a place in the army scale games section. This will be for people who just play Epic, just like most discussion for other games. Epic development will have talk about the the rules and force list developments. It will split out the discussion for playing Epic and discussion about developing Epic.

I am not sure if this is clearer. Let me know.
