They're using some sort of injection moulding system for the Finecastings.

@ Evil and Chaos - if it's injected, what do you think the mold is? Perhaps a rubber/rtv mold in a stanardized metal frame/holder that 'fits' in the injection mold machines??

Not to answer for E&C, but it has to be some sort of rubber, as the guy on Dakka had a piece of the mold stuck to the model.

Rubber seems (strangely) to be the most likely contender - same friend as above actually showed me a couple of avatar blisters at our local GW with chucks of bright red mould material lodged in the model. Only thing worse than these two will be the casts that followed them ! :D Sound like the method is still a secret inside of GW - the store manager was trying to tell us they were cast in steel injection moulds despite his top secret studio visit a while back.

By the way, does anyone know (evilandchaos i'm looking at you) how they've got round the need for mould release ? Or do they just have a sweatshop full of trained monkeys/orphans washing all their minis ?

My emergency order of metal from GW arrived today. Epic Imperial Guard characters were all metal. So my previous "emergency order" (term I am using to justify my purchases to the wife) in which they were cancelled from the invoice appears to have been a real case of just not in stock at the time.

Amusingly direct sunlight appears to be too much for the finecast resin. I've seen several reports this morning of GW stores finecast window displays warping in yesterdays UK level heatwave.

Sunlight in the UK? I thought that was a myth?

??? how bizzare, I just wonder if some of these are just rumors, However given the fact that it will not just be a normal temprature i.e ambient, I can understand that they may destort in a shop window as the glass will magnify the temprature massively,

So i dont see this been a problem, as direct sunlight is not normally a common problem when it comes to storing or playing with minatures ;)

Im sure if you put any normal resin/lead minature under a veiwing glass out in the sun it would bugger it up ;D

Regards epic

That's quite funny! Do you reckon they forgot to test it for heat/light? This could cause them huge problem in the summer and hotter countries!

I've never heard of it happening with metal miniatures but an old friend left a 40k Leman Russ on the back shelf thing of his car in the sun and it partially melted.

E&C has a crapload of hugely warped epic plastic scenery from leaving it in his car boot during a heat wave.

As for the heat 'issue', I would image 'finecast' has similar properties (structurally/molecular) with those pre-painted minis, such as Heroclix and the Sabertooth LOTR minis.

Those minis were/are made from a bendy plastic that warps under heat, the warping was/is corrected the same way, by running under hot water.

I honestly can't remember too much chemistry, school was decades ago for me.
But I think the real issue wouldn't be the temp where the crystaline structure of the material 'sagged' (which would probably also contribute to impact resistance), but the amount of 'energy' required to generate what I believe is called a phase change.
Once enough energy stimulated the molecules and phase change takes pace, the material would change from a solid to a liquid, that would be a problem.

As Glen stated, putting an object behind glass can create extraordinary condition/temperatures. Quite like setting stuff on fire with a magnifying glass.

Here is an open video message to GW from Matthew at Miniwargaming.com.

I think it's quite balanced and well spoken. See what you all think?
