November wrap-up and final pic is here: http://wargamingworkshop.wordpress.com/ ... adnoughts/
1910 points completed!

Thanks for the compliments. The LoB is actually only a single model with four magnetised arms. I am not sure where the arms come from. I had sort of assumed that they are the actual arm variants for the LoB but I guess I am wrong. They came with the model and fit perfectly (though second hand in a big lot). The only modification that I made was to bend the different whip parts of the flail arm. They were all in the same same plane before.

December is short, but hopefully I can make progress on the Nurgle contingent and/or at least wrap up the Iron Cult (undivided) models. I am building an Iron Cult Altar right now based on a spare Squat Land Train engine.

Happy New Years Everybody!

December was a horrible month in terms of painting progress. Between travel, vacation and work pressure I had a grand total of two evenings available to paint. The resulting output is consequently less than stellar.

I managed to complete the following models:

3 Khorne Dreadnoughts 150pts
3 Tzeentch Dreadnoughts 150pts

1 Nurgle Dreadnought (I temporary lost the other ones, this will be fixed in January) 50pts
15 Nurgle Mutants including command (the 9 Big Mutants are still in progress) ~250pts
6 Nurgle "hounds" (using Warhammer giant rats) 60pts

4 Slaneesh Traitor Sentinels (using old Eldar Warwalker) 100pts
4 Slaneesh Traitor Fire Support 100pts

So a grand depressing total of 860 points. Enough for the 500 points ToEG limit but far from satisfying.

I also made some more progress on the Mordheim building and painted a handful of Battlefleet Gothic fighters (Ork and Eldar).

The models are in varying states of drying (varnish, grass, etc.) so I will post pics during the next few days. Below are the different dreadnoughts for now.

Cross-post from blog: 2010 Summary

So how am I doing in this Tales of Epic Gamers challenge? First of all, it has definitely achieved its goal of motivating me to keep chipping away on the big Lost and the Damned army. That's a fantastic result for somebody like me who normally bounced from project to project. The plan in August was to complete about 11,000 points of EPIC LatD duringt the ToEG challenge, plus about 4,000 points worth of "left-over" models for their cousins in the Black Legion chaos list. Against that 15,000 points goal I have so far completed:

August: 965 points (but also based and converted the first half of the overall army)
September: 3520 points (mostly Khorne and a few other units)
October: 1300 points (mostly Undivided and some remaining Khorne units)
November: 1910 points (finished Khorne and most of Undivided, based/converted the other half of the army)
December: 860 points (random small stuff cleared off my desk, started basing/converting my Eldar, Adeptus Mechanicus and Squat armies for the next few years)

Grand total in five months: 8555 points. At this pace I will complete the project just in time for the 2011 ToEG challenge to start. I am not sure if that's a good or bad thing... On a slightly more optimistic note, the points don't tell the true story. A lot of my time in the last five months went into basing and converting which is now done for the entire project. I find that basing EPIC models takes about as much time per base as painting them. Moreover, I have left some of the "big & fun" items for the end of the project. So the remaining 7000 points include eight Titans or major war engines worth 3200 points. So I might just get done in the spring instead of late summer 2011...

Here are some more pics of the December update. Slaneesh Traitor Sentinels (which can also be used as Dreadnoughts in the Black Legion list if needed) and Slaneesh Cultist Fire Support.

Nope, not really great speed. At least not relative to the growth rate of the lead mountain. I am currently staring at four more assembled/based Epic armies of similar 10k size (Eldar, Tyranids, Squats, Adeptus Mechanicus). At this pace it will take a year to complete each army (if I don't do anything else in the painting compartment). 2015 here we come...

For my amusement I keep quarterly inventory statistics. Most quarters the painting vs purchasing ratio is below 1 but for two quarters of 2010 I managed to achieve an above 1 ratio (i.e. painting more models than I bought). Projecting those rates forwards I will have my entire (growing) collection painted in 2045 to 2050. Right in time for retirement! I suspect that's also about the time when I get to play an actual game of Epic :(.

I believe that the axe wielding arm and the flail/whip arm are both from the old Khorne Blood-Slaughterer model from the late Rogue Trader, early 40K "Black Codex" days.

Very nice army, quite inspirational.
Which army list are you using?

Yup, those are custom sculpts of a very talented artist on this forum. He is shy about sharing his work so I will leave it to him to contact you directly.

Ah, that solves the mystery. I actually have a few other parts of the 40k Blood Slaughterer in my bitz box so I am sure the arms where connected somehow. I have the "wheels" but the previous owner grafted on an old Chaos Marine torso (complete with bolter). I removed the torso, found another one of those axe arms and the chainsaw arm of an Ork gargant. For the head I found a resin cast of an old 40k Juggernaught (which was grafted onto a Space Crusade Dreadnought - gotta love Ebay mystery box purchases). So all I am missing is an appropriate torso. I will have to scrounge a bit more for one. The end result will be big enough to be a Khorne Feral Titan (maybe 1/2" taller than the LoB and about twice as wide due to the wide wheels).

Re: Army list. I am afflicted with the "collect the book" disease. Meaning that I almost always end up wanting to collect everything available in the army book. For EPIC that means that my "chaos army" ought to have enough models to cover every unit choice in every chaos list at reasonable multipliers (minimum 1 for support unit types and 2-4 for core unit types). This is made more complex by the fact that chaos has 5 gods (well, 4 plus undivided). End result is that the total ~28k points chaos "army" has enough models to build viable 3k to 6k armies for five specialist Chaos Space Marine lists (World Eater, Deathguard, Emperor's Children, Thousand Sons and Iron Warriors) and/or 5 god-specific Lost and the Damned armies. Or it can be fielded as a ~12k points multi-god LatD or a ~13k points multi-god Black Legion (doesn't add up to the full 28k because a lot of the god-specific formations can't be used in the Black Legion list).

So I guess the short answer is: any chaos list.

Here are the last items from December, after the flock has dried (and I found time to photograph). Two Mutant Covens and some "Chaos Hounds". I am still working on the matching 9 Big Mutant bases that will bring both Covens to full strength. The Nurgle contingent is heavily themed on rats so I used Warhammer Plague Rats from the Skaven range for the "hounds".

A year in review: http://wargamingworkshop.wordpress.com/ ... ance-2010/

I am currently painting the remaining Nurgle units:
9 Big Mutants
6 Traitor Rough Rider (Warmaster Nurgle Beasts)
10 Blight Drones

I can't start on the Nurgle Daemon engines (1 tower, 4 engines) for lack of the fourth engine (en route in a trade form the UK). Nurgle models are time consuming to paint, or rather time consuming to wait. I have a lot of washes to get the mottled Nurgle look but that means waiting after each step. The Big Daddy is a good example of a paint job based on nothing but a green undercoat followed by a dozen washes (and this a dozen half day waiting periods)...

Does anybody have a good pic of a Blight Drone (ideally epic scale)? I seem to remember that the upper "armour plates" are rusty metal and not organic. Is that correct?

Ye one of the FW paint styles is metallic green armoured plates with rust (the other is just full rust on the plates) I mixed chainmail and snot green to get the metalic green and then uses bubonic brown and oranges for the rust.
