Once again, I have had another failed encounter with my grey/yellow Milliput. It won't stick (to anything important), it won't sculpt, it won't do anything but mush around or crumble. I am so frustrated I could cry (I am past swearing and screaming). I can't even get it to work well as a filler!

I want to try green stuff but I want to make sure it isn't me that's the problem!

Make sure you add water to milliput, it turns into a clay.

I've always used the silver/grey for modelling & it works much better mixed in with kneadatite. Mixed Magic Sculpt/Milliput & GS is far less frustrating to work with on all fronts.

If the Milliput is crumbly, some water would definitely help unless you had it sitting out and the putty is compromised. Milliput has never been especially tacky and I typically use a tool to smear it in place on the model, shape it, & use water to then blend it into the model. Using water with the putty is essential for smaller scale work to clear up cracks & other rough spots.

Thanks for the tips! I am already using water and not havign much luck, I am just goign to order some Green Stuff when I get paid and call it a day, I may try the mixing trick too to use up my remaining Milliput.

You probably know/do all this anyway but it should be asked:

Are you getting the mix ratio right?
Also how old is your batch of putty?
How long do you wait to put the putty on the mini?
Is your mini surface clean when you apply it?
What do you apply your putty with?

Also, make sure to spend extra time mixing it thoroughly. The heat from your fingers and hands usually during mixing also makes it more flexible and stickier usually.

When I first used putties, I had issue because I didn't spend enough time mixing.

Are you getting the mix ratio right?

I am careful to cut the same amount off of both sticks and keep it as close to 1:1 as possible

Also how old is your batch of putty?

I have no idea, I grabbed it off the shelf at a local hobby lobby, but one of the sticks is off-color on the outside of the stick leading me to believe it has some age on it

How long do you wait to put the putty on the mini?

I have waited from 0-30 min testing it out

Is your mini surface clean when you apply it?

I clean all of my minis with Dawn and a toothbrush after the gluing phase.

What do you apply your putty with?

I have tried fingers and a couple different of my spatula tools.

Athmo:Also, make sure to spend extra time mixing it thoroughly.

I am mixing it till it has an even color through and through, even adding a bit of water to get it to a bubble gummy consistency then letting it firm for 20-30 min.

You can use Milliput straight after mixing. After 30 mins or so, it gets harder to work and is less tacky.

If you need to add water to get a decent mix consistency, then it implies that the putty is past its best and I wouldn't be using it for much more than terrain-sculpting and filler if I were you.

Get some fresh Milliput, and get some Greenstuff (or ProCreate). Best places to buy these putties from is from somewhere you know has a high turnover of them! Worth spending an extra dollar or two to get them from somewhere you know keeps fresh stock. I prefer ProCreate over GS, but if you go for GS then try and get a decent amount (not the 6" GW sells), and try and get it in two bars rather than the ribbon - it keeps better and is less wasteful. Example here.

I know that the putties are relatively expensive, but once you get used to using them, you'll wonder how you did without them!
