Of we go to the races...

Hopefully this is the right place to post my Tale of Epic Gamer log. I shall be posting actual updates on my blog:
http://wargamingworkshop.wordpress.com with links in this post whenever I post an update. Some official voice of this forum please let me know if that's considered bad form. The alternative would be to duplicate each post here which means re-uploading the progress images and is just generally twice the hassle. I of course would love comments either in this thread or directly in my blog posts.

So, without further ado: Post 1 for my ToEG attempt is up: http://wargamingworkshop.wordpress.com/2010/08/01/toeg-decision-making/

Also maybe of interest, I finished the Epic Ork page: http://wargamingworkshop.wordpress.com/games-armies/epic-armageddon/epicorks/

I agree with frogbear; those orks are brilliant!

I also voted on your blog for which army you should do for the challenge! ;)

How do you do your rust stains, Helge? Particularly on the Giant Ork Head objective and the supagun.

wow lots of inspiration to be found on your site.

I voted LATD, you've created some great conversions for the orks and I'd like to see what you do for LATD

Your Orks are completely amazing.
Your site is an inspiration to me.

I have voted and I'm really looking forward to seeing what you come up with for your ToEG log!

Hello

I am still away from models but have advanced to the planning stage. Lost and the Damned is the army of choice now. I have a few structural questions on the blog and would love your perspective:
http://wargamingworkshop.wordpress.com/2010/08/08/toeg-lost-and-the-damned-gathering-the-forces/

I also managed to upload the pics of my Warmaster collection so that concludes the painted Special Games stuff.
http://wargamingworkshop.wordpress.com/2010/08/07/warmaster-up/

Thanks for the compliments on the Orks. The paint scheme for the Orks is actually fairly straightforward:
1. Black undercoat
2. Boltgun Metal drybrush of the whole model
3. Block in core colours (Ultramarine Blue, Mechrite Red, Iyanden Darksun, or Chaos Black - Goblin Green for skin)
4. Wash the entire model with Devlan Mud
5. Highlight core colours (Enchanted Blue, Blood Red, Golden Yellow, or a very dark grey custom mix)

That achieves the "rust effect" on pretty much all the models, including the Gargants. The sole exception was the Stompa Head objective marker. The model is from the 40k range and has a lot of flat surfaces compared to Epic scale models. The normal metal technique really doesn't work here so I switched to my 40k rust scheme:

1. Black undercoat
2. Tin Bitz undercoat
3. Stipple on Dark Flesh
4. Stipple on Vermin Brown
5. Stipple on Macharius Orange
6. Stipple/Drybrush Boltgun Metal on a few edges
7. Use "thick" ink to make oil stains. I have a bunch of old GW inks that have dried a bit over the years and they are perfect for this kind of stuff. If you don't have decade old paint then you can mix Delvan Mud with a bit of clear-drying white glue to get a very similar effect. You basically want the "drop" to slide down from the source but stuff before it runs off the model. Once it dries it will look like an oil stain.

For stippling I use a torn piece of blister foam taped to an old brush handle. Put some paint onto a palette, dip the foam piece into it and then stipple it onto the model in an irregular pattern. This takes a while as you don't want to load to much paint onto the foam (or it will cover areas solidly). I used a whole piece of blister foam torn into rough 1x1cm pieces (the foam piece becomes useless once paint dries in it and makes it stiff).

Option 3 for the LatD, I'm thinking. :)

Wow! Great web page, and fabulous orks. I have started building a LatD army myself, so I know your problem. A few sellers on eBay buy several Chaos warhosts and sell each troop type in one lot, for instance, 40 Chaos Terminators, 80 Beastmen etc. This could prove useful. It used to be one seller, but recently I have seen several, which should mean that the prices should be getting lower and lower as well. Just a friendly tip.

I think I can do it without resorting to "multi-use" models. Though that means painting around 300 models/bases (~11k points), making it the second larges army in my collection after the Orks with ~350 models (and comparable to the BL and Orks at a 12k points level). This is classic wargamer-syndrom. The army started out as "let's just use up the left-over Chaos models from the Black Legion" and now it is morphing into the second largest lot in the collection. I bought some Skitarii and Squat infanty as "variety addition to the Imperial Guard" but deep down I just know that they will be the seed of yet another large force... It will just be a question of whether the remaining models get bought before I can discipline myself through the LatD, Eldar and Nids, or after :)

Anyhow, my game plan for the LatD is up: http://wargamingworkshop.wordpress.com/2010/08/10/toeg-latd-force-planning/

Actual painting will probably start with the Khorne or Slaneesh infantry as those models are already built. Nurgle, Tzeentch and Undivided need some more buying and building for the infantry.

Long periods away from the painting desk have a very bad impact on my painted/unpainted ratio... All the raw material for the LatD list is now ordered (from GW and DRM since no discount stores seem to cater to our particular hobby :( ). Those purchases add ~200 models to the "unpainted" side of the inventory so I am not barely above 50/50 in the Epic category (~65/35 overall).

Worse, the necessary purchase of a Chaos box (for the missing LatD beastment that I needed), gave me two bases of spare Berzerker. No big deal, except that this in turn enabled the fielding of two World Eater retinues form the stand-alone army list. That triggered the greedy impulse to see if I can't use my Black Legion Khorne element to also make a viable stand-alone WE army. A visit to Apo's remarkable sculpts and my World Eater plummeted from a rare "100% painted" down to 75% painted again after the addition of Greater Brass Scorpions, Blood Slaughterers, Berzerkers and Bikers (and because Apo makes pretty "Hoover Scouts", the Deathguard is now sliding down the same inevitable slope...).

Over 10 years without new model releases for this game and it still feels like there is always something new to purchase. Drug pushers should hire tabletop gamers as business strategists...

Drugs and minis, power creep, scale creep...hmm :D im sure that having 100% of anything painted is deeply unhealthy :D

FINALLY! I had some time on the painting table (though only a 48 hour window between flights - still better than nothing). Results are here:
