We have a local BFG campaign fleet going. I entered because my friends are playing and I want to support them even though I don't really care too much for BFG (I'm stuck on Epic).

I decided to play an Ork fleet because I'm already building an Ork E-A army.

I did read the other thread about Orks in BFG, but I haven't had that kind of luck (or skill) yet. My question to all of you experienced admirals is:

What kind of Ork fleet should I try out and what kind of tactics should I use?

I tried out a Hulk backed by two Kroozas and some Escorts and it didn't work out too well (of course it was an Exterminatus scenario).

I'm thinking of trying a Hulk backed up by a Krooza, a load of Roks, and some Escorts.

Thanks for any advice ahead of time.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Personally I wouldn't bother with a hulk.

Are you willing to spend any money on them?  If you are, I would recomend getting one of the new battleships.  The Dethdeala is the one I would personally go for, but thats because it suits my style of play.  Yours maybe different.

If you're not willing to spend, then with the use of conversions and a regular kruizer/terror ship, you can build a Hammer.

I would highly reccomend getting either a battleship or converting aone into a Hammer.  Ork ships aren't that great, and really benefit from the extra survivability and weapons of these beasts.  Putting your Warlord creates a ship that can deal with any opposing ship in boarding actions, even battleships and battlebarges.

For you Escort squadrons, Brute ramships are highly reccomended, but I couldn't back that up, as I've yet to use any.  I find two Onslaughts with a Ravager to be a good combination for escort squadrons.  Assault boats are essential for dealing with opposing Escorts, as yours aren't as fast or agile.

I am not really an Ork player, but I will pass on anything that I can. I would agree that a hulk is probably not the best idea. I like an Ork fleet to be lots of Kroozers, and I dont use hulks or roks - they are a little inflexible and for the Orks you really something that can react.

I would stock up on Kill Kroozers, and get a couple of Terror Ships. I do disagree about the Brutes though. I have not used them much, and they look great of paper, but more than half the time the result is no sign of the brute ship, a rust patch on the back of the enemy vessel and a few pictures falling off the walls.

I would go with Savage and Ravagers for your escorts. They can throw out so much firepower/torpedoes when the dice are with you that it can complete surprise the opponent. I have had a squadron of four chuck out more torpedoes than a couple of cruisers.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

My Ork fleet fought yesterday evening.

I ended up with:

x1 Hulk
x8 Roks
x10 Brute Ramships

I ran a Eldar Blockade yesterday with a Hulk and a Rok. My Hulk was destroyed but at the cost of crippling an Eldar cruiser (within 1 point of being destroyed) and destroying something like twelve Eldar escorts of different types.

It's the first game I've ever won in BFG.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Bet it won't be your last.

You have a nice fleet, simple but effective. What is it, 2000 pts?

Cheers

Chris

Chris,

The point total is just short of 1,500. I seem to remember it was 1,490.

I finally decided on the Hulk because it provides good fighter support and is really tough. Plus, I think it is the only Ork weapon with 60cm weapons. I really hate fighting without getting even a shot off at the enemy and the 60cm weapons keep this from happening.

It took the Eldar player six full turns with an entire 1,360 point fleet to take it down and he almost didn't make it even with the wicked pulsars. As it was, the hulk and its' Rok escort took down every Eldar escort that came at them, knocked 5 of the 6 points of an Eldar Kroozer, and were on their way to taking down the Eldar Battleship. Nothing else has the staying power of a Hulk. Four Kroozas would have been torn apart long before the Hulk was taken down.

I'm pretty happy with the Hulk even with its' expense.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Sounds like you have a good plan, what role do the Brutes have?

Cheers

[[[ Sounds like you have a good plan, what role do the Brutes [[[ have? Cheers, Chris. ]]]

The Brutes are there to provide cheap fodder, fill out my list with numbers, and set up to ruin the enemy's formations.

I set them up to be in position to nab enemy ships trying to ruin my Roks. It only takes a few good runs with the Brutes to make them a little more cautious.

I haven't actually used them more than a few times yet. I miss the Onslaughts but they're much cheaper and I'd rather have one Rok than one or two Onslaughts.

With the Orks, I see them as being so slow that I will never get to pick my battles so I try to make any approach on my fleet a painful one. I essentially wage a static defence every game. The Brutes are my only real flexibility. The Combo of the firepower of the Hulk and Roks with Brute Ramships set up to intercept fleets in formations has been a good concept so far.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Please change my evaluation of "has been a good concept so far."

I played another campaign game and tried out some others and am convinced that the Ork BFG fleet is broken. Either that or the SM fleet is broken. Maybe both.

Regardless, the Exterminatus mission for Orks is near impossible to win against just about any defender. I know because I've rolled this mission over and over again.

I don't know how the other Ork player managed to win, but I'm pretty annoyed at the Ork's miserable performance even though my dice rolling was average or better. My game was over before I even fired back.

I'm just about at the point where I'm ready to go back to E-A for good. It's just no fun to get clobbered again and again.

If you can tell me how to use Orks or what's good about them, please share.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

P.S.
Can single mines be used as defences and then moved 10cm in every ordinance phase until they reach the enemy?

This is how my opponent used all of his defence points.
