Hey everyone,

im thinking its time i gave painting 6mm a go, so am going to start with the Tank Company and Basilisks i have. With not having much painting experience i am wonderin if anyone here can give me some advice.

Im looking for a reasonably easy desert scheme to paint them, including tips on how to do the bases. So does anyone have some tips for simple desert schemes?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Zoglug.

One very simple method I've used in the past is a simple white spray undercoat and then a wash of thinned down Snakebite Leather. I believe Tuffskull did a similar speedpainted Desert army some years ago. Pick out tracks in a metal color and wash with black. Very very simple, and perfectly tabletop worthy. You can later go back and add some camo stripes in a green like catachan green if you want more color.

For better results: Spray undercoat white, paint desert yellow, wash with one of the new GW washes (grypphone sepia or devlan mud depending on how dark shadows you want) Leave to dry completely. You could then add some highlights by drybrushing a Desert yellow and desert yellow /white mixes for highlights or just leave them as they are if you prefer the darker tone.

Indeed, I did a simple desert army which I sold recently. I did an article on it for an early edition of incoming magazine I think. not sure I still have the PDF, but it should be available on the Incoming archive if you care to trawl through it :)

Just looked it up - its in issue 17, found in the archive here:
http://netepic.org/incoming-ezine.html

having also just looked at it, it does show its age, but its a simple system that worked for me back then & probably would do again in my lazy painting days I now find myself back in :D

Most of my IG is painted in a desert scheme. I went for a combination of looks and economy of effort.
The scheme started with a coat of army painter skeleton bone (expensive stuff, but its a primer and base coat in one), then a drybrush of model master sand. Then, 2 coats of Gryphon sepia wash. After that, its just the detail work; I do the tracks in rust w/heavy drybrush of gunmetal, washed in badab black. Having the primer and basecoat in just one layer preserves the detail well on such small models.

For the infantry, I used the same army painter, but devlan mud for the wash. the figures got 2 coats, the flocked bases one. Helmets and blanket rolls (or whatever they are on the EA figs) were grey w/black wash, Lasguns black with gunmetal highlights. The flocking for both infantry and vehicles was aquarium sand held on with watered down Elmer's glue before the layer of army painter.

This scheme seemed to turn out well. I entered my IG battleforce into the last epicomp, where it competed mostly against my other entries (!). And I still didn't make it past the first round. So, not much of an endorsement there, but in person people seem to like them.
