I mentioned to the guys I have begun to play against that it might be a good idea to organise a list of houserules in some way. This was seen to be a good idea and hopefully we can sort some stuff for our own games but it got me to thinking. Would such a thing as a House Rule Thread (perhaps with Sticky) be a welcome thread here so we can share some of our better ideas? That way we can take them back to our own groups give them a try and see what develops, what's good, what's bad, what's fun, what's not and so on. The feedback alone would be helpful I imagine. Is anyone interested in this idea?

I for one have lots of ideas I'd be keen to share.

I like this idea. This would focus more on whats actually working (for the particular gaming group) than whats "wrong" in the rules. Id definitly read it and wouldnt mind it being a sticky.

I'm sure every playing group has houserules or local interpretations.  Even as simple as "are optional units allowed (for us, yes) and are optional rules allowed (for us, almost always no)".  The exceptions for us are we use the alternate Command rules, and the alternate Flyer rules.  Pretty much everything else works for us I think.

Some groups might even decide they don't like Snap Fire

And what a cool bunch of righteously awesome dudes they'd be too.

Cool, so far so good. It's how to organise I'm unsure of. It's easy to list our stuff in a thread but not so easy to reference it later when we want to look through it. Any suggestions?

Ok, good. So how do you guys think we should do this? Make threads for each race and link them here and one for Core rules and extended Rules like Night Fighting and City Fight/Assaults etc?

Why not start with people posting in here.  Perhaps one consolidated list for each play group.  If we get enough response we could post a page per race or something like that?

Ok, sure. Alright gents come one come all. All houserules are welcome so start posting. I'll start and just to test the waters I'll only put in one small house rule that I quite like...

ORK HOUSE RULE

Added ability: (Living Shield).

Gretchin can be used as a screen to protect the Ork Boyz in the same manner as with the Targeting of HQ units. So long as they remain within 10cm of the Boyz Mob and are a closer target to the attacker then the Gretchin must be targeted first and not the Boyz. Units with the Sniper ability can always ignore Gretchin automatically.

The Living Shield ability may be a good idea for Tarmegants too but I haven't tested that yet.

It's amazing the effect a hammer and a box of kittens can have on a grown man. Not all threats need be directly applied to the subject and sometimes implied threats are best.

No one else posting? *sigh* Ok, but I'm just going to keep posting anyway.

Ok, I like an Epic 40K rule. I'm not proud of it but there it is none the less. Here goes...

ORK HOUSE RULE

Added ability: (Tank Riders).

Orks aren't prissy little fuss pots that need to sit all cosy and womanish inside a vehicle, oh no, these Manly?.. (Orkish) Orks can sit on the backs of tanks like real... uh, Orks. One stand can be transported per Tank in the normal manner for OTV transported troops.

(It's not a big deal but I think it's an elegant small rule that can help motorise your Mobs and give some added firepower in the form of added tanks).

good ideas, warhead!

We use the following house rule since we got fed up with how useless buildings are with the current rules. They are death traps imho:

General: Solid Structures

All weapons with "Destroys Buidings" ability are changed to "damages buildings"

Standard Buildings have 2 points of structural integrity, Infantry gets a fixed bail out (4+) when building is destroyed.

Although this sounds really harsh, this rule has improved our games greatly. Buildings are again a vital tactical component in the game, reducing the überpower of cavalry to the favour of infantry.

I think for city fights and other building intense battles you've just got to do this. Good idea, I like it. Personally I would maybe give the "Destroy Building" units something extra too. Better armour (one re-roll?) as they are made for city fighting, that sort of thing but it probably doesn't matter.

In my City Fights I have issues with Warp Missiles insta-destroying buildings but as yet have no fix. Any ideas?

yeah, just let a warp missile destroy one structure point and voila.
the main idea behind this house rule is that one has to fire twice at any building to destroy it.
