Chris:  Several acrylic companies make texture gel.  I use a Liquitex gel (the consistency of fine paste) with a fine sand texture.  You an get various grades, but I use a fine because you can always spread it on and then add bits of different sizes for varying texture wherever you feel the need.  The gel will pretty much adhere it.

Also, it's made to mix with acrylic paint, so you can mix in a base color if you want.

Liquitex runs about $6US for a cup-sized tub, iirc.  It's been a while since I bought it though, because a single jar lasts a long time.  If you want to color it, the craft-grade acrylic is quite cheap compared to miniature paints.  I'd say a $1.50, 2 oz jar of craft paint would probably color an entire tub of gel.

I've never used it for large expanses of terrain, but I'm sure it would work fine.  Personally, I would build the terrain, texture it, then prime and paint and not mess with coloring the gel.

If you want an example, it's small, but the base on my Stormboyz Nob entry was done with the gel.  I primed it white, washed with chestnut and drybrushed with desert yellow.

Or, the cheapest option is propbably old standby of thinned down PVA glue and sand... but Stormseer is right.  Never pay for GW stuff unless you can't get it elsewhere.  Builder's sand and play sand is available for a fraction of the cost.

Thats the plan Stormseer! I guess I am a bit of a GW tool, as I bought a bag of GW sand once....It's still unopened....

Cheers

Chris

Rugby "sharp" Builders sand - ?1.40 odd for a bag that needs 2 hands to carry. Definitely enough for scenery  :D

I'll be making a simple (read "flat") 6 x 4 desert board with mine as well. Just trying to think up a good way to add contours & cover for desert scenery!

Are there any retailers in Europe who have either Liquitex or something similar? When searching the Web I got 973 hits and at least the first ones seem to be in the US.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I will undercoat everything in black.  I find it far better than the white.  It seems to cover better (but could be due to its easrier to see where you missed) and automatically creates the shading.

For the base, I'm tempted by a desert scheme, purely because of the speed and ease.

I actually have some GW sand too  :{   Well I may aswell use it up.

I'll have a look over your stuff Jimbo, for inspiration.  Although I'm increasingly leaning towards DethSkullz.  If I do go for them, i just need to think up a more effective colour scheme to the one I did on my Stompas (even though they do look a little better in real life).

And T.S.  I'd love to meet up for a game one day.  As I dont have any opponents, I'm always eager.  I hope I can persuade my regular 40K opponents to epic.

I'll post a rough list next I came up with last night.

I didnt mean what to use, I have a huge stockpile of Jabalite (polystyrene to any normal human outisde of Builders merchants...).
I meant what actual features to build. But this is a topic for a new thread rather than cluttering another diary ?:D

Well, since I've discovered this marvel known as free weekends, we'll have to arrange something definite after February. This goes (provisionally) for anyone in the UK who wants to meet the touring IG ?

Okay, the preliminary list;

Uge warband - 730
       + 3 Dreads [105]
       + 4 Kommandoes [100]
       + Extra Boyz [25]

Stormboyz - 250
       + 4 Stormboyz [100]

Big KoS - 350

Big BB - 225

Big Stompa Mob - 440
       + 4 Dreads [140]

Total = 1995pts.

5 Formations

46 Infantry Stands
7 Dreads
16 KoS
6 Stompas
8 Guntrukks

I've got a little of everything I think.  Some fast elements (KoS, Stormboyz) Lots of shooty (stompas, BB, Warband) and a decent amount of troops and HtH potential.

Is there any major weaknesses?  Anything I should drop/add in?

I tried to make it an easy list to add or take things away, especially since the Ork list isn't finalised (hopefully today).

I would break the warband up into 2 formations and drop an upgrade to pay for it. ?At 2K, 730 points is a HUGE formation. ?Admittedly, it will be nigh unbreakable, but it's also slow and not terribly tactically flexible. ?You will likely be outmaneuvered.

2 formations gives you more choices and another activation. ?That still leaves you with 2 good sized warbands or 1 big, 1 small depending on how you do it.

I would also tend to drop the Kommandoes in favor of boyz/grots. ?I don't see the scout and infiltrate abilities being especially valuable in a footslogging warband.

In keeping with the way you seem to prefer your lists, I would recommend:

Big Warband - 530
+3 Boyz
+3 dreads

Warband - 200

That would leave you with a very tough warband as your largest formation (still more than 25% of your army and the BtS Goal) and give you another anchor formation for a total of 3 sloggers and 3 maneuver elements.

Okay, sounds like good advice.  I dont play hardly ever, so don't know what units work, and what dont.

My 40K ork army is a very stompy one, and I wanted to keep the theme in epic as much as possible.  Well, at least for the warbands.

I do realise I have no ranged MW, but firgured at this size they wouldn't be necessary.  Or am I being niave?

What is the BtS goal?

BtS:  Break Their Spirit.  The destruction of the highest point-value formation.

I seriously doubt that at 2K you'll miss MW attacks.  You'll have lots of assault, which works okay on hard targets, and a handful of dreads to go after anything unusually tough.  Also, if you were worried about it, you could drop a couple boyz and add an Oddboyz upgrade to the BB to get a SupZzap.

I doubt anything will require it at that point level, though.  The best someone could do with a GT list would be a scout titan or superheavy.

Hi nealhunt,
add a Landa  :D

ok, it doesn't fit in a footslog army, or a training army, or a 2000 point army.... but picture a band of Orks crashing down from the green sky (green?!) in a glorious dive... ahh yes..if the Landa is the only good thing to come out of E-A, it's good enough for me.

I'm assembling a bad Moon army - for some reason (weirdboyz, most likely, in days of old) I always liked the yelloboyz, although I tend to go for black with yellow dags or somethings. The Kult of S are usually traditional red, and provide an element of Sunz. Ok, very traditional - but red onez DO go fasta  }:)
Since the Moonz and Sunz try to outdo each other, I call the lot the Eklips Boyz.
And I'm planning a formation of landa, which, taking the hint from another thread, I will call the Thunda Bads (Bad Moons, of course).
:oo

Meanwhile, my first Landa conversion, Thunda Bad 1, is on the way.

With regards to basing, an excellent material for boulders, rocks or rubble is clay-based cat litter. For as little as Lm2.00 (around 3.50GBP) you can get a few kilos worth, enough to swamp Waaaaghhh Ghazgkull three times over. See you get a clay product, not the wood chip types. If you borrow some from a cat owner, please insist on unused stuff. Even the orks aren't that tough.  :oo

cheers.

Thunda Bad...nice!

Okay, I started making all the infantry stands and the mega armoured Nobz.  Once made I'll prime them all black.

I'll also get the guntrukks primed at the same time, and get as much of the army together as I can and see if I can get a early pic of it.

I wanted to get more done the weeked, but spent most of it clearing up the house after the workmen had messed it up.

Vanvlak:  A man after my own heart.  I've got about 5K of Bad Moons, including 3 landaz, but not counting gargants.  Once the new deth kopta figs are out, I plan to have a serious air assault force.  I also happen to have about 3K in Sunz/Speed Freeks that will occasionally throw in with the Moonz.

Hi Nealhunt et al,
I have around 6k worth of Orks - they are Bad Moonz, but don't know it yet, bec. they are still (with 1 or 2 exceptions) unpainted. This is all that Landa's fault...

In contrast to you, however, I am still building up an airforce: in fact my sole element is my Landa-in-progress, Thundabad 1  :L  ; others will follow, if I can find more bitz, and I will buy 1 or 2 (gross); and a few fighta -bommas. But at the moment my Orks seem to have come right out of the Space Marine edition, with no fliers at all - hold on, 90% of my Orks ARE out of the Space Marine edition! So that's why!!

Currently I'm waiting for the sealer to dry on Thundabad 1 before painting her - I mean it.  :{  T1 is 44mm long and 65mm wide (span, rather) - as I have no idea of the size of a real Landa model, is this larger or smaller or similar?

Are your Landas conversions nealhunt? Any pix anywhere?

Meanwhile - having rediscovered the joys of Epic and of Bad Moonz - I'm converting a rather speshul Gargant....I'm tempted to call it Deffsta...

orky cheers
