how many? Is it 2xMW or 2 lots of 2xMW (suggested by the twin pulsar bit)? Came up in a game against TRC - I've always played it 2xMW but he insisted it would be 4xMW (which I would be v. happy with :)). Thanks!

it's a twin pulsar ( XD ) thats why it's MW +2 and not +3 like the revenant pulsars and pulse gives it two shots

right, so that means 2xMW2+ then?

Correct. If it meant it had two weapons it would say something like 2xpulsar. Twin pulsar is simply one weapon system and the twin part is there boosting weapon stats. Much like lascannon has AT5+ and twin-linked lascannon has AT4+. Meanwhile two lascannons would be 2xlascannon AT5+.

Rather interesting why twin-linking is disadvantage compared to having them as separate but ah well.

Didn't help in that game though :)

Really the Eldar list needs a rewrite and the pulse rule removed and hard stats written in properly.

And realy how is the scorpion supposed to compete with the void spinner?

Personally i think it should be better, because I have a million 1st ed SHT's :)

How is anything supposed to compete with a void spinner?

Great armour, skimmer so it can't be close assaulted, huge range and disrupt. Guard pay same for what in comparison?

Void spinner = new broken eldar toy?
Too good for points anyway.

Umm well IMHO, as with many Eldar units, I suspect the view that they are 'overpowered' may only b true where they are used en-mass. Put another way it is very much down to how they are used.

Individually Eldar WE are generally poorer in comparison with IG WE in most departments.
  • Weaker assault stats  (FF5+ as compared to FF4+),
  • Shorter range (60cm MW as compared to 90cm TK),
  • Weaker armour (5+RA compared to 4+RA),
  • More expensive (250 points compared to 200 points).
They are slightly faster by 5cm, have skimmer and of course they get hit-and-run all of which can be used to hide them from enemy fire.

Like most artillery formations down the ages, their power does tend to increase with numbers. So three Scorpions concentrating on a part of the battlefield have more than three times the effect of a single WE etc. The problem with this analysis is that we tend to play 3000 point games where players are hard put to get sufficient numbers for these effects to be demonstrated. For example 2x Guardians, 9x WE and an Aspect with the SC might look quite formidible on paper, but I doubt it would do very well against air assaults, massed artillery or Hoard armies like Tiny-Tim's speed freaks.

But doesn't the void spinner trump those problems? Its artillery so the other we's don't block line of fire. Its disrupt so good for infantry and armour. Its a skimmer so no close combat worries. As single We formations they don't worry about losing the odd point of dc. It can counter-battery enemy artillery far better than they can get it.

I don't know the Void Spinner is overpowered or not - but I definitively think it is better than a scorpion 9 times out of 10 and better than nightspinners 9 1/2 times out of 10.

IIRC, we went through a 'significant' rewrite under Sotec, losing Spirit stones etc as a result. The revised Pulse rule toned down some of the more excessive shooting while improving others, and was generally agreed to be most beneficial. I might add that I do not think I have got even close to winning a game with Eldar since this rewrite (though others have done better).

And the Scorpion competes with the Void Spinner by moving to the enemy (and indeed not being a statitic target in its own right). Indeed, 2x MW2+ should virtually assure two hits against AV without RA under most circumstances where Void Spinners are clearly better against unprotected infantry mobs. The point being that Eldar WE are specialists, so you really need more than one of each type to cover all the potential circumstances - which reduces your options elsewhere.

Incidentally long suffering eldar player, do you think multiples of EoV's should get discounts? Say 1/2/3 - 250/475/700? I must say I've always gone for activations over the extra bm from 2 void spinners, or the 'resilance' from a larger formation. Though Cobra may as well only be got in pairs with 2bp each.
