ALternatively, try a number-of-ships approach:
0-1 battleship or fortress
1-3 cruisers
4-8 escorts
(as a very hastily prepared example).

Hmm,
lot of Chaos/IN players don't use escorts at all so that would put them off.

I think the number of ships approach is better, as some fleets as necron pts heavy will get little ships (of course you could have tons of escorts) or dark eldar fleets pts light were you will see tons of ships, perhaps this approach.

Basic.

0 - 1 Battleship/Fortress/Similar

0 - 4 Cruisers

0 - 8 Escorts

However, you can swap the escorts for extra cruisers, i.e. 4 escorts to a cruiser. hence a a possible format would be;

0 - 1 Battleship/Fortress/etc

0 - 6 Cruisers

or exchange a battleship for an extra two cruisers;

0 - 8 cruisers.

or perhaps 2 cruisers for a battleship;

0 - 2 battleships

0 - 6 cruisers.

This would please most people, as it allows close to any format you would like in a fleet, while still leaving it open to smaller fleets, or big ship fleets. Of course still follow normal ship selection rules.

Just to some up:

Basic Fleet Selection;

0 - 1 Battleship/etc.

0 - 4 Cruisers

0 - 8 Escorts

You may swap 4 escorts for a cruiser and visa versa, similarly you may swap a battleship for 2 cruisers and visa versa.

What are peoples thoughts on this idea, IMO it allows almost anyone to enter with little complaints.

Personally:
I don't want to force it too much. Rule cluttering should also be avoided I think.

I think any legal fleet at a given point value would be rules enough for the category.

I think that any fleet formation is a good fleet.
Leave it totally free. If someone want to field hive fleet Kraken that's ok, a quick response fleet of just cruisers would also be ok. Right?

I would say: More than 1 ship is a fleet. :)

And printable PDF-diploma for prize!

800-1000pts sounds like a good sort of size to me.

Would a flexible range be okay?

Thus fleet must be within 1000-1500 points.

I strongly support this option.

If you want to encourage enteries I think the category needs to be fairly flexible as it is a fairly effort intensive one.

I can't see someone painting a fleet for a painting competition unless its the fleet they want to game with.

Hi guys/gals, has it been a year already??, I like the idea of a fleet section, and would support the flexible points option.

Anyways time to get those ships painted and any other mad conversions I can think of. I've been playing warmachine for the last year so got a bit side tracked from BFG so have done nothing since last years comp.
