In my previous thread, I compared this army to my Iyanden force I painted "in real time" on the old forums.

I thought it might prove interesting if I did similar with this Imperial Guard Force. Thus starts my painting Diary for speed painting my new IG desert regiment.

Painting detail is low, speed is fast. Vehicle design is sorted, but I'm yet to even think about Infantry. Any suggestions greatly welcomed!

Force composition currently stands at:
1 Regimental command company
1 Leman Russ Company
1 Artillery company (9 manticores - not keen on selection, would have preferred basilisk & bombards, but I have no other spare "clean" artillery!)
1 Mechanised infantry company
2 Super Heavy Companies (only intend to ever field 1, but 2 gives me the options)

1 Demolisher squadron
1 Stormtrooper squad
2 Fire Support Squads in Chimeras
1 Lightning Fighter Squadron
1 Hydra Support (either static or mobile, cant decide)
Possibly a FW Manticore squadron, (either static or mobile, depends on above)
2 units of 4 sentinels

All these minis are either unpainted, or painted to a terrible level & dont fit in with any other forces, but they're thin enough to paint straight over. The Vehicles are all also either from Forge World, or old models with the exception of the demolishers. This is because I wanted models that weren't covered in the gubbinz of war. Whilst I love the E40K tanks that are covered in camo nets, Sandbags etc., it slows down painting & I want this force FAST!

So, after my initial post inquiring about colour schemes, the force was looking a little like this:

Day 1 - Tuesday 21st October

The challenge has started, the paint brushes are loaded and once again I've set myself a challenge and am wondering whether there's any hope of completing it. Ho Hum, to the painting desk.

First job was to get a mix of brown wash that I was happy with. When painting an entire army, if there are colours that I intend to mix, I mix whole pots of them at the start so that its constant throughout the force (where appropriate - orks of course get a rough guess every time!). 3:2 water:ink seemed to satisfy the tests, so a pot was mixed. Being an ink as well, this will last me well beyod this little force!

Then I did a little work on the next decision for the force. My current trend (and the trend of many others it seems) is to base all the miniatures, including vehicles, in an epic force. Being a desert, army, the base style was pre-determined.

A splash of Vomit brown over a warmaster base, followed by a coat of sand and a drybrush of Bleached bone, and a simple basing system was formed. I decided to folow my basing system I've used on my Orks to keep things simple; Walkers and light vehicles on an upside down SM era square base, Tanks and Heavy armour on Warmaster Bases & anything bigger on Flat titan bases (2 if needed).

Gluing down my Leman Russ test piece, I decided to go with the basing plan as it was simple, but added a decent amount to the overall basic job I planned on doing on the models.

That done and decided, I began to paint some more Russ'. 2 basic coats in, & was already bored with fussing over the Leman Russ Company, so I set to work on the Chimeras for my Regimental command Company. First I painted & sanded enough warmaster based to do all the vehicles. I suprised myself with the speed of the paintjob actually completing all the basics before the glue on the bases had properly dried!

But, by the end of the night all was well and my first company's worth of vehicles rolled off the production line, needing only a few dabs of colour on their company markings to finish them off.

Day 2 - Wednesday 22nd October - Day of drink....

Went for a drink after work which rather interupted the painting schedule on this, just day 2 of the challenge.

Still, starting painting at 10pm on my return (the one benefit of not being able to drink alcohol, I can go "drinking" for 4 hours & have no problem focussing to paint...  :D) I finished off the Company markings on the Chimeras & Got the Rest of the Leman Russ Company painted in its 3 layer brown colouring. Forgot to take any pictures though.........

Day 3 - Thursday 23rd October
Its a bit Ironic really. I decided against the Steel Legion theme for this army, so what did I spend half the day doing? Painting miniatures insteel Legion Colours - Gotta love painting for Fanatic! Did make me glad on my colour scheme choice though, just keeps it different enough not to get totally bored!

Anyway, Progress report for the day:
With news of more work forthcoming from Fanatic, and thus the possibility of affording some reinforcements for this force, I Started with a trip to my local GW to stock up on required colours & a couple of bags of warmaster bases. I'm dug in for the long Haul.
Whilst there, I set about the Leman Russ company with Fury, getting them 85% done. They need highlights to their company stripes (as can be seen by the test tank's stripes being so much brighter in the picture below), but I'll get that done tonight (if I dont spend too long typing all this...)
I also painted & added sand to about 30 bases. I figured it was easier to do them in one batch & have them waiting rather than keep repeating in small doses as needed.
On top of that, I've done the basic brown stages on 8 Sentinels, and hope to get a bit further on them before I call it a night.

And so it is at this point that I shall ask:

Is anyone interested? Shall I keep up the Diary, or just post pictures on the project's completion?

Let me know & I'll shut up if preferred  :D

Whatever you do, don't shut up. And that's an order!  :p

I like to daydream that someday my troops are painted close to that standard of yours...  :blues:

keep it going, very interesting, however

My current trend (and the trend of many others it seems) is to base all the miniatures, including vehicles, in an epic force.

why oh why???

what is this all about basing vehicles?

why are people doing this?

is it just because GW are doing it?

it looks pants on the gaming table (well that is my opinion) though I will concede it looks good off the gaming table (which is why I guess people do it...)

why

OK, thanks all for the comments, I will keep up the diary

As for basing vehicles, It looks good on the table too, when you make a table to match the bases that is ?:D

I have Orks & SM's on grass bases, and my basic table to match.

I have a tundra table, and was intending to use my tundra regiment on there along with 'Nids. However, I'm probably base any 'Nids I now do for Desert for opponents to my IG.

My Cityguard are currently all alone on my City table, but the table itself isnt going to be ready until February, so I may have time to speed paint some opposition.

And besides all of those excuses, my miniatures spend far more time in cabinets than on the table, so the bases are a big benefit there ?

So Finally, the real reason:
" 'Cos I WANT TO" ?:p

Definately keep the diary going. Your Eldar one was one of my faviourite articles on the site and it is very useful for me to see how much quicker someone else can paint and still do a far better job than me!  :{

Also, I am with Jimbo on this, I really dont like armour on bases. Infantry, of course. Heavy infantry on single bases. Light armour on bases, but not tanks. But that is just my opinion.

It is also depressing to see that by the end of your day one, you had completed what would usually take me about 3 months!

Tuff, if you have a spare army for me to use, how about trying to persuade GW London Plaza to let us use their table for a game with this?
}:)

I'm up for that.

I was just thinking about the armies I have & their basing.

I dont have another army completed yet, but if I can whip this one out in a month or so, I'll try and get something done up as opposition for February & the release of the game.

I was going to do 'Nids on Desert, but that would be a playtest rules set. I might see about doing either a second Marine or Ork force on Desert. Marines take no time at all, but Orks would look so much better! Which would you rather play as?

As for speed of painting, try not watching ANY TV (or playing computer games if they're your thing)- You'll have a lot more spare time than you thought....
