This is actually a pet peeve of mine.
Most Map-based campaigns have moving armies that expand into enemy controlled areas.
this I feel is a good way to describe campaigns of old (renaissance, 30 yeras war even napoleonic wars). Where the logistics forced an army to always stay on the move or starve. Furthermore conclusive battles were sought after but easily avoided (most times a inferior army could extract themselves from a bad position and move away).

Epic is more akin to WW1 and WW2 and the diffrence in weponry and logistics gave rise to frontlines. Which that kind of campaign doesn't simulate well.

My version of a campaign would have 2 main sides (imperial vs Orks or some such). you would divide a mighty empire set in roughly two sides. Flags would be placed along the "front" to show the border between the armies. Every Campaign turn each side would get x amounts of extra flags, depending upon scouting abilities some of these would have to be placed before the attack phase. One side would be the agressor and designate his attack points (Lets say there are 3 imperials vs 5 orks and orks were the agressors, thay would have a maximum of three attacks). Depending upon the size of the win, the terrain in the hex (think ardennes, the terrain hindered the germans in their efforts to capitalize on their sucesses) you either push back the enemy (making a bulge in the frontline) or eliminate the enemy (thinning his frontline). You could encircle a part of the frontline and eliminate all therin and so on.
Depending upon all battles in one turn you would see who was the agressor in the next turn (gaining the initiative).

This type of campaign would be playable with 3 sides at the most (maximum you can get and still have a contact between all players.

this is all from to top of my head and I don't say that this would work or anything just that this is what I would like to see.

Great ideas, they've got a lot of potential. You should work on them. I like the image of two forces pushing against each other along a huge front, probing for weaknesses and breakthroughs.

And if you wanted to play with a larger number of players, with this kind of system you could divide them into teams. That might also make it easier when people didn't show up.

My version of a campaign...

Hi Shoel,

As mentioned, I'm working on a campaign system in the background, and it looks like our ideas have a lot in common.

Would you mind doing into more detail about your "frontlines" concept and how you see it working? If possible, a blow-by-blow description of your vision would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance.  :))
