Cool idea, i was thinking about undearwater Wh40 games after i saw this model kit.

I also used fliped up side down chaos battleships for in my epic games, wherever they were playing as chaos invasion fleet or imperial barcks. the battleships are perfect for that. As for rules for ships i suggest to look at mano'o war. After all BFG owns much to this game. Although it became horribly unbalanced after some rule and fleet adds but the original rule set was pretty decent(Waterline hits, crew counters etc.)

Saw the thread and found it very interesting. In one of the old Fire Power magazines ( I think it has been awhile) they did an article on "Orkinawa". There were all sorts of Ork landing craft that looked like the World War II Higgins boats. There was also an Ork aircraft carrier and a few cruiser like ships. The senerio was composed of Guards, Marines and Eldar allies defending against a large Ork beach assault. I am currently in the process of moving so all my stuff is packed up, but in a few months I will try to post some of the pics from the magazine as reference if you are unable to find a copy.

Okay little more background info:

It was in Epic 40,000 Magazine Issue 8 and the article was officially called Ork-o-Nowa.

"The game was called Ork-o-Nowa. It indluded approx 50 scratch built Ork ships, ranging from an aircraft carrier to battleships, and a wide range of smaller types of ship and numeroius landing craft." P 16.

Hi,
First of all, I would like to apologize for my bad English (I'm French and it's my first post on TC  :D ).

I'm very interested in this idea of exploring the aquatic side of the 40k universe. It's one of my wish to make a fan-rule for aquatic battles. But I have an other vision of them in the 41th millennium that the sea surface battles.
I think that those encounters are 90% submarine (because classical ships are quite exposed to space-ship and aircraft when they are at the sea surface as it had been previously said).
An other point is that abyssal surface is very big in comparison to ground surface (don't have the values sorry), that's why I think that BFG escorts could perfectly act as submarriners, exploring the sea world, attacking abyssal stations and lurking around sea-side cities.
In fact, this kind of battles could be represented as skirmish between 1 to 4 ship on each side, using similar rules than BFG (mainly for movment, torpedoes and submarines modules) with extended damage rules and the aeronautica's altitude system.

I think that it could be quite easily done, don't you?

I have to admit that the idea of naval combat is very interesting, but that being said I see some pretty big holes in the idea of 40k universe naval battles:

As previously mentioned, why sail arround when you can fly arround? If almost every race come to another world from space with huge ships capable of killing a lot of surface dwellers before deploying ground troops, then the reason for bringing fleets to a world under assault dont seem plausible to me. This could be salved by saying that some planets could possibly have almost no above waterlevel conitents but still have valuable resources to fight over (water world)?

If you where to take the fighting below the water it would be to reinvent bfg, since subs behave simmilar to spacecraft (they move in space not just on 1 linear surface and so on). inspiring as it maight be to do, the game is already out there?

Personally I find the theme of naval combat more fitting for a pre spaceage setting like with Man o war, but as i said the idea is interesting and I look forward to seeing what you can come up with.

Why have a sword and drive your tanks to the enemy?

Hmm point taken. I guess that the different combat styles of the different races and armys are founded in their own traditional style of war...I still feel that a "worlds covered in water" setting would work best though.

I have spent some time actually putting together rules for Aquanautica Imperialis (AQ) for the 40K universe. I have formatted some of the rules and placed them in the link below. The Ammobunker Creation Thread has all the “unformatted” fleet lists and Scenario rules attached to them. In addition, you can find some crude templates to use to play the game and represent the various fleets, and they are designed to fit on a standard A4 (8.5x11) paper for printing.

Anyway, take a look at the rules, test them out, play some games, and let me know what you think.
