A little something I was pondering about. There are stories in the 40K background in which aquatic combat takes place. However, this aspect of the 40K universe seems to get forgotten in favour of probably yet another Space Marine codex.

Now, the BFG rules are pretty much based on 2nd combat between shipswith a very Age of Sail kind of vibe. How difficult would it then be to simply translate that gamesystem into something that is fought on water instead of space?

Not 100% sure yet how to pull it off but I'm thinking about using the BFG lists and rename a few of the things and perhaps create some new stuff (terrain would be somewhat different I guess) and we're set right?

Excellent idea!!

BFG rule swap around would work well without making people learn another rule set.  The only hard question is what miniatures would you use.

I was thinking of scratchbuilding some Ork ships, the only thing I'm not sure about is the scale, I was thinking of something a little bit bigger than the BFG models and some more "flat" surfaces to make the ships look smaller (it's the amount of detail in the BFG models that make them look like kilometres long space ships).

So yeah, first gonna start on some Ork (scrapyard, or whatever you want to call it, IP and all) ships which could fight amongst themselves. My converting skills aren't that great to create Imperial ships but I could give those a try later on. But yeah...first got to finish my other modelling projects.  :vo

One problem with BFG rules conversion to Submarine game is the way inertia works in space contra water.

In space thare is no resistance but in water you have a great deal of resistance.
So instead of a forced movement in BFG You would have a forced stop in a submarine game.

Cool idea.

A 1:1 translation would work really well.

Maybe some slight changes to reflect water.

The main idea is water surface warfare, however submarines could be added, they would of course have a whole bunch of special rules and such.

That would look odd and wrong I think. The Imperium should have ships like this.

why it would not work...

1. Completely counter fluff.  If an enemy has a navy its more effective to bomb it from orbit or send fighters to destroy them. Its why the age of the battleship ended when the age of the carrier began.

2. what about races that would never even bother making naval vessels? why would the eldar bother when they have skimmers?

3. there is a game that was made by GW for naval combat in the fantasy world, called Man'o'War.  it tanked.

Not necessarily.

The Imperial Navy is sparse in the vast greatness of the Imperium so not all worlds would 'benefit'
from orbital bombardment. So less important worlds could/would see naval assets and battles.

True, some races, would use skimmers. But, alas, that's not the issue.

Man'o'War: What do you mean with 'it tanked'? By many it is seen as one of the better games
by GW.

but battleships are so cool.   :)

ill try one of the easy-way-out-ships just to see what i can do with it.

have you thought about making this two work in scale and not just using the bases for meassuring.  with a model on top just top make it look good.

i never liked the scale ins BF.
will i like it in AQ-I?

What scale in BFG do you refer to?

in bfg the distances are so great that if the ships were in scale to planets and distances the gaming table and terrain would be HUGE. the models are merely there as eye-candy. its the(pin in the) bases that count. thats the scale i dont like.

with surface ships that could be fixed and make the models count.

Hmm and still they fight with swords and shields in 40k. Their space ships use age of sail tactics, their groundforces fight as if it were still the days of Napoleon or WWI and wear very bright colours. But yeah, a picture can say more than a thousand words right?

Let the Eldar have skimmers? Orks, Chaos and Imperium would have ships and submarines. The Tyranids would have some strange aquatic creatures. The Tau might simply use skimmers or have races fighting for them who use aquatic ships.

GW simply ditched it, kind of what they have done with all the Specialist Games now but more honestly...
