All the Ork free cards also help them a fair bit at really small battles.  Freebooters are particularly handy.

You could try playing Assault rules with the smaller 2,000 point army made up from one of these better armies (PDF etc) against 4,000 points of anything else.

Make the fortifications free (but limit the number to how many company cards their are or per 1,000 points) as even at half price most oponents wouldn't bother taking them.

Hi!

My standard points value for a "regular" game is 6000. I consider anything smaller "skirmish"....  :p

I am fond of 8000-10000 though.

The largest game I have run to date was about 20,000 points per side. Tyranids versus Imperials. Imperials won.

My dream is a 100,000 point per side. Space for tables, not models are the limiting factor at the moment.

Now that I live in Oklahoma, I think I can swing it for a convention there.

I would like it to be IG versus Orks.

Quick, everybody here needs to buy a ticket to Oklahoma, that's not something to be missed.  :))

Hell... I'd considering flying down and bringing my IG to throw into that fight. It would be incredible.

Hi!

It's only been until recently that I have really thought about doing it.

Living before in Puerto Rico with no gaming conventions put that idea on ice for years.

I went to SoonerCon back in June in OKC, saw the ambiance and started to think about its viability again.

I have been trying to calculate the tables needed. I know from experience that about 30k can be fitted (tightly)on tables 12 feet long by 4-5 feet wide.

So I assume I need 30 feet long, 6 standard tables long, 2 wide. About 12 tables all told....

Hmm... me thinks convention people may balk at this. Lot of tables and space tied up.

I guess I need to make some inquiries....  :p

Hello Folks,
For my money, I think 2500 points makes an ideal evening game of 4 hours or so.
Wow- some of you must be playing fast if you can get through a 4000 point game in that time! I prefer to mull things over.

I actually like the problem of picking just 2-3000 points- tricky to get a really balanced force but with plenty of punch. I also love the way that in a small game, the titans tend to be the real centre pieces- as it should be! The fall of these beasts often then heralds victory or defeat- I love that pivotal monent of the game (unless it's my titan being trashed that is!).

I'm also with those of you who fear a lack of space- anything over 4000 points demands a hefty space- I shudder to think what a 10 000 point game would require!

We play on a standard 8' x 6' and can go to 6000 without any real space problems. You tend to take more titans/praetorians anyway.  Time becomes the issue with the bigger games though.

:)  To right and no mistake!  :)

If you have a room for your games table alone then you can always pick up next day (time permitting) or next week but if not I would stick to games of 5-6000 for an all day battle (10am - 10pm...ish) or 4000 points and less for a half day game.

Hi!

I must play in some weird time warp, but my games never last this long.

Albeit it is highly dependent on the two players and their relative knowledge of the rules and speed in making tactical decisions.

I had one opponent where our 4000 point games would last 1 hour and 15 minutes on average. Add to this 30 minutes set up time.

Our 6000 point games were around 2 to 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Granted we knew the rules so well, we never looked up anything. We played the game like speed chess. Literally making our moves in seconds.

But I do understand longer games if people partake of more social aspects (talking during the game, breaks for snacks and such), after all these things are fun too!  :)

You forgot to allow time for the catching up on gossip and other various talking pre-game and the pre-game beer. The laughing and talking about some of the happenings during the first half of the game while having a beer. The consuming of the take-away food while talking, but this time about more serious worldly matters through out the week/month and discussion on new up and coming games, films etc while having more beer. The trips to the toilet and to get more beer. Laughing idiotically about Nurgles Flatulence Chaos Card (just a lame example) or some such that calls game to a temporary halt for half an hour but no one cares as it's all good fun. Finally it becomes obvious for one of the players that there is no way for them to win the battle and both players proceed to the after game analysis and army/unit conclusions again while having a beer... (No! Never drunk only slightly merry)

Or is that just me and my lot that does this?..

hehe,

perfect description of how our games look like, warhead. And the eternal question: "hmm, do i open up another beer, or would this already decrease my tactical ability..." Takes about 70% of my brain power during a game.  :vD

Sounds like my games too, Warhead. For me the social aspect is as important as the game itself.
