"As part of the Classic BattleTech briefings at GenCon, Catalyst Game
Labs announced that they will soon be releasing a Clan Boxed Set that
will act as an expansion to the Classic BattleTech Introductory Box
Set that they released last year at GenCon.

The boxed set will include:

Clan OmniMech and battle armour miniatures
Rules for battle armour
3050 upgrade variant record sheets for all 24 `Mechs from the
Introductory Box Set
Primary and Alpha configuration record sheets for the Clan OmniMechs
and battle armour
Map tiles: cardstock hex tiles to add terrain items to existing map
sheets
The boxed set will not be a stand-alone product and will require the
purchase of the Classic BattleTech Introductory Box Set. The map
tiles are part of a larger HexPack product that Catalyst is currently
developing. There is no word yet on the number of minis or hex tiles
that will be included in the boxed set."

Excellent news!!

Cheers

James

Thanks PG

What did you make of this news? Or are you an Inner Sphere player?

Cheers

I love the idea. I bought two of the Intro boxes just for the minis and if these are the same quality I will do the same.

Supposedly it will have rules for Battle Armour in it as well and also have some cool little hex tiles to add new terrain. I tend to play using my Epic terrain so that isn't as big a deal for me...

I actually really like the Clan Invasion timeline as it was done at the height of my interest in BattleTech.

Succesion Wars a-go-go!

Now if SoW picked up that theme, but with some aliens thrown in, it would get abs marv. And space combat for inter-planet action (2mm). And platoon skirmish (28mm) for covert operations. Tall order.

I actually really like the Clan Invasion timeline as it was done at the height of my interest in BattleTech.

Initially I was a bit unsure about the plastic minis in the Intro Box Set and was thinking of trading them away. But I saw someone (not sure who) who commented that quantity has a quality of it's own, and I also saw some painted examples on the web. I think they paint up really well and drybrushing seems to suit them.

So my opinion on them has in fact changed by 180 degrees. And I hope to eventually pick up a second box set. So I can paint up 2 sets for main force and OpFor for use in campaign.

I find playing on hex maps is good for learning the basics but playing with minis with terrain is great. Like yourself I use my 6mm terrain for both games.

I quite like the Clan stuff of early 3050's. Many of these are mechs that I grew to know and love in MWDA. For me the Timberwolf/Madcat is one of the signature mechs and also liked Summoner & Hellbringer. I am less keen on the newer Clan mechs but then the only newer Inner Sphere mech that I really like is the Davion signature Templar.

That is not to take anything away from the 4th Succession Wars era. Most of the mechs I bought were fieldable in 3025. Much more challenging for heat disspation and weapons had less knock out punch. But I have really enjoyed playing light/medium 3025 mechs.

Cheers

James

I disagree with aliens in BattleTech. Part of the appeal of BattleTech is that it is purely human based. It makes the inter house rivalries and alliances that much more interesting and believable. It reminds me of mediaeval and other periods of history, which no doubt is where the writers got many of their ideas.

I mentioned that in the TGN review but I can't imagine that I was unique in that :-)

The TGN review also has some great painted samples by one of the Camospecs painters that really show how well you can paint those plastics

Next to OGRE, Citytech was one of my first games so it has nostalgic value to me too

I then didnt play for, literally, decades as I didnt like how the game went and I went off to play (and do) other things.  The recent Classic Battletech project recaptured my attention though and brought me back to the fold.

I have the boxed starter set and the new rules book (which actually I bought on a whim in London because I wasnt going home without anything game related and was able to convivnce myself I eneded SOMETHING to read on the 28hr flight home!)  Actually, I was initall dissappointed with the minis too- lots of flash and some bending in the plastic, but as you say quantity has a quality of it own.

I see BT as the next step once the boy has got the grasp of AT-43 and a bit more experience.  How convenience thsat I can use his "training" as an excuse to buy more stuff I like.

Now then, I didn't mean in BattleTech, I meant for SoW.
The general milleu of BT is the same as outlined in SoW, but not at all the same (well the clans make it more the same) at the same time.
Neither is as insanely chaotic as the Imperium setting, they both have a psycho-logical good setting.
Meaning that there's a lot to look at in BT when building SoW.

I dont think we (DRM) would go quite as far down the 'Mech' path as BT, as SOW has alway come out of a love for the combined arms approach to games. However, I have noted your comments. Thanks.
