Hi there,
I read that some people (at least PixelGeek) are involved in playtesting Sci-Fi Commander. Did you have a look at the army lists? What do they look like? Are the fluff oriented? Similar to the E:A ones? Any different?

Could you use existing E:A armies? Any rebasing needed? I use round bases for HQ units in Blitzkrieg Commander.  Should this be done for SFC too?

Cheers,
Warpy

Early on Pete had a public forum for the lists and they were mostly following fluff where possible.

If you have HQ stands for your EA armies I'd leave them based as is. As long as they are easy to pick out from the normal troops I'd not have a problem

No need to rebase. All of my command stands are quite distinct.

The game uses HQ and CO stands so you need at least one "supreme commander" type stand for your army.

I have started creating round based command stands for my armies with the larger base being the CO but there is no need to do that if you don't want to.

The army lists are much different than E:A lists in that there is no structural basis to them. You buy units, they have a "per 1000" limit on them and each army has a limit to the number of certain types of units, like recce or heavy tanks, that you can buy.

Most 40K based armies are very fluff themed in games like Epic and this really isn't the case (so far) in SFC.

This does mean that the armies often don't "feel" like their 40K equivalents. So the Eldar don't have any of the fluff based rules attached to them

I actually think that this is a good thing since it divorces the units from the fluff and in E:A it is often the fluff based rules that are a PITA to balance.

One benefit as well is that you can build an all Aspect Eldar army if you want and there isn't anything to stop you. :-)

As an observation, this seems like the system that the core Warmaster uses, of the type:

Per 1000 points...
Eldar Guardians: 1-3
Aspect Warriors: 0-2
etc

Exactly.

SFC has categories for units (tank, SPG, Support, Recce etc) that not only have game effects but also allow the lists to have limits placed on them to stop you from building an all WE army etc.

So the limitations are all unit based not structure based. Easier to balance I think as you avoid situations like we have in the CSM list where Obliterators are a great deal in Chosen formations but not as great a deal elsewhere.

SFC doesn't build armies with formations in that manner so it avoids those sorts of problems.

hello,

How big are armies going to be, say at 1500 pts.  Roughly how may bases of infantry etc, for example for Space marines?

The reason im asking is because in BKC the armies are pretty small at 1500 pts.

Im thinking about basing because i have hordes of infantry, and i want to use them all, but without having a massive game that lasts a week.

Im thinking 40mm by 40mm 10 models to a base. (ie a squad).

any chance of a rough example of a force list?

cheers
steve

1500 points will be a small game. The last games we played were 5000pts and that seemed to be equivalent to a 3000pt Epic game.

how about basing, i know that there are no official basing rules as such, how are people planning on doing them, or are you leaving them as is?

ive never been a big fan of the epic bases, too small and fiddly, if theres a gust of wind half your army goes with it.

im planning on rebasing everything, including my DRM stuff, thinking 40mm by 40mm for infantry types, not sure about vehicles yet.

any thoughts?

I'm leaving my figs as is. Basing horde armies on large bases doesn't change the number of bases you need for the army though

Thats what i was thinking, only with slightly smaller bases, 10 models per base (obviously depending on what they are) i can then make a mini diorama on each base if i wanted to.

I'd do it the exact opposite way. I'd base the horde troops on smaller bases and then use the larger bases for command stands to create the interesting dioramas.

Unless you have a stand army with one or two unit types that are "hordey" in qhich case go for it. But I wouldn't, for example, do an Ork or Nid army with 40 x 40 bases.

just to be clear, i dont have any horde armies, ie orks, nids etc, what i meant was i have alot of infantry (marines)etc.

if i could have 10 bases of infantry represent a battle company, (instead of 20 in epic) that, i think would be a bonus.

i dont have the time to play huge games and i dont play in tournaments, so i think it will work.  8v)

anyway, whens the book out?..............

No clue. Pete has added some new terrain and photos and that has caused some delays (as was getting them shipped) but I think he is still working for August.

Command stands in the game always look good with distinct basing and are a good place to start doing mini-dioramas.
