This thread popped into my in response to two things.
1.  Xavis space marine thread below (excellent by the way)
2.  I found an old detachment sheet from an elimination tournament I played in a couple years ago.
The thing about this tournament was, 3 of the contestants who brought Space marines to the table were playing Ultras and 2 were playing Dark angels.  I saw two game where the same chapter was fighting itself.  This struck me wrong somehow.
I am by no means a purist, but I live for the fluff.  I decided if I ever built a space marine army I would create my own chapter.  I'm doing this now.  So to finally to get to a point.  Does anyone else play their own chapter?  What's it like?  How do others react to your departure from GWS catechism?

I haven't played anything yet, but I enjoy creating new armies & chapters. One of my first tries (Crimson Suns) was published in Incoming 11:
http://www.netepic.org/EZINE/html/issues.htm

Nothing too original there, but at least I wrote the fluff myself.

I have several chapters in the works but these are proceeding slowly. These include Winter Lions (a "Finnish" chapter), Bear Claws (a "Soviet" chapter), Death Angels, Death Knights, Void Vampires and White Templars.

I am kinda conventional I am afraid :(, Dark Angel player - although creating my own chapter does appeal to me :).

My chapter is entitled the Royal Anglians

As you can see they are in camo

The armoured vehicles follow a British Army camo pattern (green and black)

but they look like they have been on campaign for sometime

very dusty and dirty

no real fluff about them at all really

One of my Space Marine Chapters was called the Swords of the Emperor, but tragically half the chapter was lost during warp jump (read moving house) when the battle barge they were in was assaulted by the evil hand of Chaos (read incompetent removal men). After that incident they were  renamed the Swords of Vengeance. Companies 1, 2, 4,6 and 7 were lost as well as the entire complement of Tanks apart from a handful of Rhinos therefore only Veterans in power armour can be taken and they can only take upto two Rhino's.

In Epic games I limited the force to taking only normal marines, Rhino detachments and any other detachments that weren't tanks.

I did have some well written fluff somewhere but it's either lost the last time I cleaned my Hard Drive or it's somewhere amongst all my many hundreds of poorly named files.

Like netepic, Im a conventional player because I like the fluff and GW Chapters.

The vast majority of my SM Force is Dark Angels, but I am building a full Battle Company of Flesh Tearers too.

One day, I plan to have a detachment from each (still loyal) Founding Chapter available to me on the battlefield eg White Scars bike det, Ultra Tac squad, BA Assault troops etc

As long as I use regular SM rules or Raven Guard (index astartes) rules for them no one complains about my force since the rules are fully official. Even if I created my own rules for them I doubt any of my friends would complain as far as I told them beforehand and the rules were not broken.

When it comes to fluff, there are a thousand chapters around so having 8 otr so official ones released is quite a small number of them. LOADS of chapters are not created in fluff, even in name so I feel with plenty of freedom to do whatever I please there, as you have already seen :)

One think I don't like is the chapters being 1000 dudes strong. To me heresy legions would be 100,000 to a million SM strong each or so, while regular chapters would be 10,000 dudes per chapter. This was already discussed in an other thread so I will shut up, but I still feel more comfortable adding a zero to GW's numbers. On the other hand I have made my chapter "official" when it comes to numbers, so only 300 marines remain, not 3000, that is what I would consider a depleted chapter :)

Regards,

Xavi

I never play established forces. I have two Marine Chapters (although only really in fluff and a few examples of minis), an Eldar Craftworld and whatever else I can get. I like the idea of making my own stuff up, even if it means that most of the time I have to use the basic 'vanilla' rules.

My Marines are:

Storm Swords (Epic) - A strike force specialist chapter (I know that 'all' Marines are... except that they are not). Blue armour, lots of Razorbacks and Assault troops. Specialist support formations of heavier stuff.

Angels of Wrath (40K scale) - Grey armour. Each company recruits from a different type of world, giving them different strengths and weaknesses. For example, the first company are recruited from Hive worlds, making them excellent at space boarding actions, the sixth company recruits from mining worlds, making them a good siege company.

I have elements of 5 SM Regiments, BA, DA, SW, UM and Salamaders and 5 Traitor units, Thousand Sons, World Eaters, Sons of Horus, Emperor's Children, Night Lords.  Since I started with SM1 my forces go back to the Heresy. My Chaos SMs are a different set of Templates, and I use the CSMs for those, while my Traitors are just Mk.6s & 7s, that will be painted differently.

I did my own Chaos space marine chapter, The Darkforge. ?I'm doing a space marine chapter now. ?The Night hunters. ?As I've been playing around with fluffy ideas I've decided to make them Anti-Night Lords. ?We know that prior to the ?Heresy the Emperor was planning to deal with the night lords. ?I thought it conceivable that he may have commissioned a chapter in secret for this task. ?The chapter was not ready and therefore did not participate in the Heresy wars. ?
They were instead been consigned to their own dark world of Gyaros. ?
Night Hunters are rumored to be the gene seed of the night lords themselves. ?They are supreme night fighters. ?Their tactics will mirror that of the night lords. ?I invision them with the same ruthless streak as the lords but tempered by Imperial loyalty.
Mutations of their Occulobes let then see in complete darkness. ?It also causes their eyes to glow pale green.

Their banner, showing their color and motto.

I hope to post the full fluff and army list as I develop it, as well as some pics of the marines themselves.

I've created a number of chapters of my own over the years. Some being represented in epic, others in 40K conversions and others in fluff only.

My biggest collection is the Emperor's eagles chapter of which I have the entire chapter painted (badly - blue & Yellow quarters) including support. I cant remember much of the fluff behind them. Their first company contains scouts and Veterans since the Chapter has relatively few Vets & in this formation the new recruits learn fast from the experienced fighters, if they live long enough. Their 4th company was almost entirely destroyed in one conflict and their armour colour was changed to balck with flames as a mark of respect, with just shoulder pads divided Blue / Yellow of the rest of the company.

The Chapter I most enjoyed working on was actually a legion. Named the "Legion of Perpetual Vengeance", it was outside teh Imperium but fought the forces of chaos. Basic story is that its a rag-tag collection of ex-chaos worshippers who have escaped the clutches of their Gods and "seen the light", realising the horror and pain they are destined to suffer at the hands of the ones they serve.

Thus they united and continue to get recruits to fight against the evil forces which they now despise. Basic idea was I've always had a pet hate for the forces of chaos, but wanted to have a chaos based army so I could do all the cool converting it brings with it. This way I could still feel righteous, still fight my favoured foe and still weild a scalpel at every model

The big batch of desert stuff I did for the Epic Golden Demon was a custom IG / SM force called "Gideon's Sword."

I'm working on Jopallis right now.

Good to have returned to civilization....Now on to the topic,

I believe that inventing your own chapter really gives your marines some character. I know the standard chapters have all the fluff but there is nothing better than coming up with a force that reflects your interests and characteristics. I currently have two chapters that I created, one was the Knights of Terra that was posted on TS' site and the Centurions of Ravenna.
If you've read the story for the knights you will know that some of the names came from the Napoleonic era and the battle described is an actual battle that i have had the fortune of visiting the site. On the other hand the Centurions reflect my interest and  personal background of the Roman Military machine especially the Roman Navy.
