Okay, got in another "Murder of Monoliths" game, this time against Marines.

One of our Marine players really prefers a "Mud Marine" approach, with few air units, and lots of boots on the ground.

Battlefield:

4x6
Marines chose edge deployment.

Deployment:

Marines had no reserves.

Necron kept all formations in reserve.

Marines garrisoned Scouts and Land Speeder 2 off the Blitz and placed them on overwatch.

Remaining (Marine) deployment as shown:  Speeders 1 and 2, along with Warhound 2, were tightly intermingled.

Turn 1

Massive wave of teleports?

Pylon 1 shows up smack dab on top of the "black rock" and get a Blast marker on arrival.

Monoliths 3, 6, and 9 all get a single Blast marker while Monolith 7 breaks and withdraws on arrival.

Turn 1 -cont.

Strategy roll: Marines

Warhound 2 advances on Pylon 1 and breaks it.

Tactical Detachment sustains fire on Pylon 2? and destroys it!

Phalanx 4 emerges from Monolith 6 to engage Tactical 1, staying out of the overwatch range of the Scouts.  The Tacticals counter charge into Monolith 4, allowing support from the Scouts? and Monolith 5.

The Necrons take out 2 Tactical Marines, the Hunter, 1 Rhino, and 1 Razorback, but they lose Monolith 4 and its Obelisk, along with the Pariah, the Necron Lord, and another Warrior!  The Necrons have a lot less support now and wind up being wiped out, breaking Monolith 6 and putting a Blast marker on Monolith 5? who didn't even get to flux!


Monolith 9 then proceeds to engage the savaged Tactical 1.  It loses its Obelisk, but only a single Tactical Marine unit survives to back off towards Warhound 1.

The Tactical HQ sustains fire on Monolith 1? and takes out it and its Obelisk "bodyguard".

Warhound 2 sustains fire on Monolith 5? and both Necron units are also wiped out.

Monolith 8 advances on the Whirlwinds? and takes out the Hunter and a Whirlwind tank.

Speeder Detachment 1 advances on Monolith 3 and breaks it.

Phalanx 3 emerges from broken Monolith 3 and engages Land Speeder 1, who counter-charges into Monolith 2!  That Tactical HQ lends support.

Two Necron Warriors are taken out and 2 Land Speeders also drop, but the Necrons win, taking out another Speeder as the survivors flee.

Slightly repositioned, Monolith 2 fires on Speeder Detachment 2 and takes out a Tornado.

The Scouts drop overwatch and double to fire on Phalanx 3, catching them in a crossfire? and a sniper shot drops the Pariah unit, breaking the Necrons!

Phalanx 2 then powers out of Monolith 2 and engages the intermingled Scouts and Tactical HQ!  Speeder 2 snaps of an ineffective overwatch shot.

The Necrons lose? the Tomb Spyder? while the Marines are *savaged*.  In the end the Marine Supreme Commander escapes in a Rhino while a single Scout leave the dead Librarian behind, racing away in 3 Razorbacks.  (Those Razorbacks must've had 'extra armour' because they just saved and saved!  *laugh*)


The Thunderhawk comes in for a ground attack? actually landing to catch Phalanx 3 in a crossfire with Land Speeder 2? the broken Necrons are eliminated completely.

Phalanx 1 emerges from Monolith 8 to engage the intermingled Tactical 1 and Warhound 1? the Necrons lose 2 Warriors, but eliminate the Tactical Detachment and inflict 1DC damage on the Warhound, which backs away.


The battered Whirlwinds head the advice of the Supreme Commander and sustain fire on Monolith 3, but do no damage.

Seeing a lot of smoking wreckage, the Thunderbolts dive down to strafe Pylon 1? hit something important? which cause the xenos machine to explode in a green flash?

End of Turn:

All Marine formations rally and the Thunderhawk departs.

Monoliths 2 and 8 remain on the battlefield.

Monoliths 3 and 6 remain broken in the "great beyond".

The Thunderhawk comes in for a ground attack actually landing to catch Phalanx 3 in a crossfire with Land Speeder 2 the broken Necrons are eliminated completely.


The T-Hawk landed in order to use the crossfire rule.

Turn 2

Monoliths 7 and 9 teleport in safely.



Strategy roll: Marines

The Whirlwinds sustain fire on Monolith 8 and the nearby Phalanx 1, taking out 1 Obelisk and 2 Necron Warriors.

Land Speeder 2 advances on Monolith 2? and take out the Monolith, leaving a broken Obelisk behind!

Monolith 7 engages the Blast marker covered Scouts.

In the first round of combat, neither side does any damage at all to the other! ?In the second round? *both* sides are wiped out! ?(If there had been formations in range for support fire during a "wipe out" would it count as *both* sides losing? ?Cuz they sure didn't win!)

Monolith 9 sustains fire on Land Speeder 1? and wipes them out.

Warhound 2 advances on Phalanx 1, taking out an Immortal and cause the formation to withdraw back into reserve via Monolith 8's Portal. (Not sure if that was actually allowed? but it seemed cool at the time!)

The Thunderhawk lands again to catch Phalanx 2 in a crossfire, destroying the Pariah and the Necron Lord? but they're not broken yet!

Phalanx 2 tries to engage the enemies harassing it, but fails? and must move back because of the nearby Land Speeders!

The tiny Tactical HQ sustains fire on Monolith 9, and takes out the Monolith!

Warhound 1 advances on the Obelisk of Monolith 2 and sends it crashing to the ground.

The Thunderbolts ground attack Monolith 8 to no effect?

End of Turn:

All Marine formations rally and the aircraft depart safely.

Phalanx 2 rebuilds their Necron Lord and successfully rallies.

Monoliths 3 and 6 and Phalanx 1 rally in the afterlife.

Monoliths 3 and 6 teleport in safely.

Warhound 1 advances on Monolith 6? and places a Blast marker.

The Whirlwinds sustain fire on Phalanx 2, killing a Wraith, a Warrior, and the Necron Lord? again? they break.

Monolith 3 doubles to the Marine Blitz and fires on the Whirlwinds, taking 1 of them out.

Phalanx 1 then engages the intermingled Whirlwinds and Warhound 2.  The Warhound barges to bring Monolith 3 into the fight!

The Necrons lose their Pariah and another Immortal, but erase the Whirlwinds, drop two Void Shields and send the Warhound packing.  The Phalanx then consolidates into the Portal of Monolith 3 and comes out at the Tomb Complex! (Not sure if that is right either, but it was cool!  *laugh*)

Speeder 2 advances on Monolith 3 and puts a Blast marker on them.

The Tactical HQ doubles to the Tomb Complex and fires on Phalanx 1, taking out a Warrior and breaking them.  *sigh*

Monolith 6 advances on Warhound 1 and drops a Void Shield.

The Thunderhawk ground attacks Phalanx 1? *not* landing this time, and eliminates the threat.

End of Turn:

All Marine formations rally and the aircraft depart safely.

Monolith 6 is the only Necron formation on the battlefield? located on the Marine half.

Marine 2 (BTS, Blitz) vs Necrons 1 (BTS)

Well, that was certainly a short-lived reign of terror!  *laugh*

Guess this means I can graduate to Neal's even more montrous "Murder of Monoliths" army.

Strategy Rating 1 and no Supreme Commander were major handicaps for this form of the list.  A higher SR is really going to help.

Aye, I'd say that the SR change has been the singlemost influential downgrade that has helped in balancing the list in the latest iteration.
