Hi all!

I am new to this forum and to BFG.

I have only played a couple of games so far and I enjoyed it very much. My friends play Imp., SM and Chaos so there's not too many races left.

So I got Eldar and that's no problem for me. The game play looks interesting and the ships look great.

But how is game balance?

The chaos looks (stats vice) much better than the other races.

So far I have:
- 1 Eclipse
- 2 Shadow
- 6 Aconite
- 6 Hemlock
- 6 Nightshades

Can you please give me any suggestion of what to buy next and how a well-balanced fleet would look?

Thx in advance,
MAGNUM.75
(I like the spirit and feeling of this forum.)

Greetings, welcome to the board.

I'm an Eldar player myself primarily, so I'll try my best to give you good advice.  :-:

What you have so far is a good start.  Personally, I dont get the most out of the Shadow, so would prefer two Eclipse.  When you do get it right though (with lockon) it is very deadly.  }:)

If you can afford it, a good buy is a void stalker.  It is the only Eldar ship tat has a range greater than 45cm and has L/R firing arcs.

It is expensive, but as you have to have a very expensive prince for fleets over 750pts, its a good place for him.

Eldar's strength are in their ordanance and escorts.  Dont worry if (and you will be) you are outnumbered by enemy cruisers.

Try to pick on parts of the enemy fleet at a time.  As if they dont get away from thier target, they will be in big trouble.  Eldar can-not win wars of attrition, and BFG is the best for showing this.

I have a fleet list in the battlegroups section on the main page.  Have a read through this, as it lists every ship you have (plus the void stalker and hellebores) with some advice on how I use them.  It also gives a 2000pt army list.

Have a look, and tell me what you think.

And again, welcome.

THX Shadow Hunter!!

What is your opinion about the Helbore?

In my eyes it looks like an all-around great ship, but fragile and a little expensive.

I see on other threads/topics that the Hellbore isnt used too often so should I bother and order it when I order the Void Stalker?

Welcome I'm only reletively new here myself but already feel like part of the crew and I sure the other guys will make you feel at home also.

I've had a little experience with Eldar. I personally prefer to go heavy on Escorts. Basically they excentuate your strength of speed and manouverability. The Eldar Cruisers also suffer horribly from weapons batteries (being bigger targets) and from criticals on a 4+ (not a problem fro the escorts).

The only escort I'm not totally convinced with is the Hellebore (torpedoes, Weapons battery and pulsar) as I find it hard to take advatage of all it weapons at the same time. A Hemlock and Nightshade can be had for nearly the same price and provide much more flexibility.

My fravourite ship in the fleet is without doubt the nightshade. V fast, and Eldar torpedoes are deadly. They are your only way to really cause damage while keeping your distance.

When it comes to cruisers The Shadow is OK but you really need the attck craft of the eclipse and especially now you can't have more active squadrons of attack craft than you have launch bays you'll have to take two to acheive any great offensive objectives with them. You'll always want at least one though to run fighter screens (to protect your escorts from assault boats among other things).  Probably the best way to use your bombers is in co-ordination with your torpedoes.

With that in mind I'd usually take 2-3 squadrons of nightshades, a squadron of hemlocks aand a squadron of aconites with an Eclipse Cruiser and a Prince for the rerolls.

For you next purchase I would advise another eclipse and 3 more nightshades. Other people probably have very different ideas though.

Good Luck

edit: I write this before shadow hunter replied but my PC crashed. It looks as though we're pretty much giving the same advice which is encourageing.

The Hellebores best use is as a reserve as they can pretty much fill in any roll neccessary but again I would prefer the destroyers.

Well as a loyal servant of the Emperor, all I can really say is that Eldar are hard to hit, but they make a nice *pop* noise when you do score :D

Seriously, I find their small nimble escorts harder to combat than the larger vessels. ?Using swarm tactics and hit and run procedures, they can take apart a cruiser very quickly using its blind arcs. ?I have found that Marines and their Thunderhawls have good success though in using large strike wings against them.

My 2c worth to tell you how this enemy at least views your fleet. ?May you have success...but not against me :;):

I really like the Hellebore.  Its a great looking model, and is very flexible.

However, it is as fragile as any other escort.

For 5pts more you get a nightshade and hemlok, that can do the same job, have more staying power, and if in a squadron, chances of better leadership.

Those are the reasons not many people use them.

I will try to squeeze two or three in if I can.  As they are so flexible, they can fulfil any role.

Sniping at long range = torpedoes
attacking heavy armed ships = pulsars
outmanouvering = Eldar speed
lowering shields = batteries.

I will hold them out of harms way until I see a perfect oppurtunity for them.  If I need support, I'll bring them back.  If I need to gang up on something, I'll send them too.

Try not to put them with the smaller escorts, as they are fractionally slower.

As usual, I was slow in responding because of being at work, and Tas and Dooglebug replied inbetween.

As Da bug said, the hellebore isn't necessary (I still take mine purely on the model) so, as you already have hemloks and nightshades, you dont NEED one.

If you are considering another carrier, an eclipse is nice, but a Void Stalker better

Obviously it costs more too.  The model is very nice.  Although I really am puzzled why they put the funny patterning on the solar sails  :oo

So, I'd advise a Void Stalker.

Dont forget two other ships none of us have yet mentioned.

The Aurora and the Solaris (from forge world - yum yum).  I haven't yet used them, but I think they have potential.

I dont know of anyone in my area that doesn't allow any ships from the gothic mags, so I think you'll be fine.

Welcome Magum.75,

We like the spirit and friendliness of the forums as well.

Your Eldar fleet looks good. Much like I advised the last new player, I find that tactics are much more important than ship selection. Developing the "hit-and-run" tactics that Eldar use takes time and works better against some fleets than others.

About game balance: It really doesn't exist for the game outside of the initial two fleets: Imps and chaos.

The other fleets were add-ons and are often outgunned and outplayed by the "intitial two." Some of the new fleets were more powerful at one point, but playtest and magazine changes tend to pare them down (the Necrons for example).

The Ork fleet can be particularly bad, or to put it in another way, it can be VERY VERY difficult to use well. Some missions are near impossible for the Orks.

Many missions are also near-impossible for the Eldar.

In our last BFG campaign, the Eldar player and me (the Orks) banded together because we kept pulling impossible missions for our fleets.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

I'd just like to say, that when you do get your tactics sorted, Orks can be awesome.

I won our clubs BFG tournament using Orks, with a 100% win record.

I do admit to using the 'ammer, however, which helped me in a lot of the games.

My biggest advice for Orks, is lots of assault boats!

P.S. - In the battlegroups section on the main page, there is further info on all the BFG fleets under the heading D'aynes spotting guide. (although some are still to be written). ?That maybe worth a look too.

The Hellebore is good to put inside a Nightshade-heavy squadron. Say you have 5 nightshades in a squadron. Putting in a Hellebore will still provide you with torpedos (important, since if you selected a hemlock or aconite, you'd have to put it on the outside so it didn't break up the massed torp salvo, which is not where you want to be putting the expensive escorts) and 1 lance (nice for a backup, and still able to fire when BFI).

If you have a non-Nightshade squadron, you're probably better off going with a hemlock and/or aconite combo to bulk it out, since you won't necessarily need the torps.

Welcome to both :) I am a newie as well and have no experience neither with or against Eldar, so I think you are better not getting any advise from me.

Only one thing: if you do some calculations (boredom of summer made me do that) you'll find that most of the time lances are simply better than massed fire, 4 lances being superior to weapon batteries
I bet the more veteran players will start yelling at me now ;) a thing that in fact I am expecting, to see if my numbers are correct ;)

Health and a lot of sixes,

Xavi
