I know everyone likes pdfs, but I am elaning toward making it MSWord because it can use internal hyperlinks to navigate around.

FYI,  if you use Open Office you can export to a PDF with internal hyper links to other parts of the PDF.

Also Open Office is free and multi platform, making it easy to transport documents from one creator to another. All they have to do is download the software and they are ready to go.

Yes that was my thoughts when I made the handbook using it...  :;):   Makes it easier to pass the torch.

It is a bit 'temperamental' at times, but if its machine spirit is nutured with the right incantations and ligations it works out in the end  :)  And it is being upgraded all the time.

Once this infrastructure is built, however, I believe it will be time to vote a new ERC, establish a community ruleset, and start relying on NetEA as the primary support.

I speak from personal experience that this is just going to get a threat of having GW legal going after you.

There are emails being exchanged and hopefully some accomodation can be reached but at the moment I would not move forward with this unless you want a nasty letter from GW Legal.

PG,

I didn't quite follow your post.  Are you saying this with a general warning or do you know of any inside info that would indicate GW specifically does not want this particular thing to happen and they are talking about it.

If it was the latter I'd actually be impressed! :)

I'll say that I now have some more present concerns than in the past.  I've stated multiple times that GW's IP people are very leery about the fan-based development for SG.  Evidence is pointing to their legal department getting itchy trigger fingers.

I dont know if you are at liberty to go into any greater detail Neal, but chancing my arm here I assume they would only get annoyed about alternative core rules?

The thing that always worries me is where fans include SG written text in new documents.  Is that the case or is it likely that reaction will be against wider development of the rules- ie changing and disseminating anything that is GW IP could be construed as breaking copyright.

I guess now is not the best time for me to announce that the Siege of Mossino / Death Korps suppliment is within days of completion then? :D

I don't want to give out details unless the people involved are doing so.

E&C:  I seriously doubt such a thing is a problem.  In the worst case scenario, you agree to submit it to Fanatic.  That gives GW copyright and, assuming Andy prints it, public distribution like you want.

But isn't Epic's current development entirely fan-based?

I don't want to give out details unless the people involved are doing so.

I have had a text version of the Epic rules kicking around for some time (for another project) that has all the GW IP removed from it.

I started a Wiki and started entering the rules text (I'm up to 1.10)  with the expectation that it would be used to publish the new rules review changes and act as an updated and current version of the rules that you could actually link to.

This URL was sent to the ERC and Andy for comment and Andy's comment was that I would have to shut it down as it would get a response from GW's legal department.

I then said that GW should do the same thing then.

Andy said they didn't have the resources.

I replied that it was ridiculous that they didn't have the resources to do the project but would have the resources to threaten to sue me if I did it on my own.

Neal jumped in to try to defuse the situation by suggesting that GW Legal could give us some sort of dispensation to do the project and that is where is stands. Andy hasn't replied and I am going to assume that if I make the site public I will get a legal note and a possible DMCA takedown notice that will remove my site from my ISPs servers.

I would assume that any public attempt to do so by any other party would result in the same legal threats.

I believe so, but there's still someone at GW that has to put the stamp of approval on it.  Like NH said, this gives them copyright and ownership of the document.

To say that I am pissed off is an understatement.

Its a ridiculous Catch-22. They don't want to support the game but don't try to do it on your own as they will sue you.

Wankers.
