That's the same technique shown in the BOFA rulebook, IIRC.

This "essay" on painting GHQ minis just blew me away. ?The guy actually printed out a google-map of Russia reduced to 1/285th scale and incorporated it into a diorama.

It's definitely a different aesthetic than the GW standard, but amazing nonetheless.
