I am fairly easy going when it comes to GW and their marketting. But, there were two things that I caught my eye in the December White Dwarf (UK) - I know, I just needed something to read and to look at the pretty pictures!

This issue has a 'welcome to wargaming' article for all those people who get some strange plastic men for Christmas.

Quote One:
Our Specialist Games range has several games set in the Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 universes that include 5mm warfare...

Horray! SG get a single line, which is good. But, hang on a second... 5mm? When did that come out. I have to get into this new game.

So, WD dont actually know anything about Epic. Big surprise!

But, the thing that disturbed me more than anything, and which I think marks a crossing of a line is this:

There are other wargames, but the players of these tend to devote themselves to re-enacting historical conflict.

Thats right. Mongoose Publishing: Helping us 're-enact' that time that strange aliens were found on Pluto!

WD have actually managed to be condecending and totally inaccurate in a single sentence.

This little gem has actually angered me! It shouldnt. I am OK with GW not acknowledging other games and companies, but to actually brush others under the carpet in this way is just underhand!

The last issue I bought was the one with the free Dwarf & Night Goblin on the front.  And that, really, was the only reason I did.

WD just isn't worth the money anymore unless you're aged between 10-14 years and know nothing about GW and their range; it's essentially a catalogue now aimed at getting this age group to part from their disposable cash.  There's nothing worth reading in it anymore, especially from an Epic or SG view point.

And that's so gutting, as I can remember when it was THE place to get exciting new rules for alternative/new units (I think the most thumbed issue in my collection is the one with the Vehicle Design Rules! :D ), and to see some really nicely painted and converted armies.

Now, if you want any of these, there are dozens of forums with very talented model makers/painters, people with interesting ideas for new army lists/units, and you can find out what is being released months before WD even bother to print a silouhette preview of it...

Unless WD takes a radical swing back to how it used to be, I can't see myself buying it ever again.

It started to do that, just before or after Paul Sawyer left; but after a while it went through another editorial change - putting the website team in charge, IIRC - and whatever slow creep towards quality was completely ruined as the shiny catalogue roared back with a vengeance. ?A suitable analogy might be a recovering alcoholic diving into a swimming pool filled with beer.

There's no hope of recovery, IMO.

On the original topic: an extremely cheeky crack, but don't get too het up over it. ?After all, most of those 12-14s who continue will be re-educated sooner or later, and I'd say we could have a hand in that. :;):

I bought WD regularly in the TL days and especialy back when E40k was released. However after the Tyranid range was released support staggered considerably. I thought I'd buy a couple of issues when E:A was released but that was a less than impressive read. There's just no way I'm going to bother bying WD again ever. Period.

Hi Guys,

Never been a WD subscriber... did subscribe to Epic Mag and its predecessors...

Not a GW fan, but willing to play their games with others... just not support them.

I did a calculation on most GW figures yesterday and the average GW 40k and WHFB ?figure now costs somehwere around $4.00 to $5.00 USD... EACH! Your only hope if you buy GW is to use very small armies or go plastic...

Shoot. I can get Foundry for cheaper than that.

Shabbat Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Honestly, how much effort (and space) would it take for WD to give a brief description of each SG game individually?

I stopped reading WD shortly after the release of E40k and from what I've read about the current state of WD, I can't imagine ever buying another issue.

The only time I even read the WD anymore (store copy, not actually buy my own) is to get the designer's notes on the revised codex.  There hasn't been an interesting BATREP in ages.  The 'New Release' section is horribly out of date.  I could go on, but I'd just be preaching to the choir.

Curious - might our WD editor actually be right?

If you took all the wargamers other than GW, would the majority of them 'tend' to be historical rather than fantasy?

What sort of market share do other fantasy systems have compared to historical?

Is any other fantasy/sci fi system seen as regularly seen as FOW for instance? Not around here that's for sure. There is a bit of warmachine and confrontation but not much. Also WAB is seen from time to time. The rest are all historical games.

Glad to see SG mentioned anyway! :)

I had an interview for a job writing for White Dwarf three months back... since I didn't get the spot (I sensibly blame the nascent cold I was hit with that morning that had me laid up in bed for the following four days) I'm happy to say that yes, WD is rubbish!  :D

Actually I think you are right. I talk to about 4-5 historical wargamers a week (well try to they can be really pretentious and elitist until you prove your a human being to them, yeah GW staff are pond life, thankfully I did history even if it was ancient greek history, though I have a interest in oriental history too), I never talk to non-GW fantasy gamers at all, well I can't remember any time. maybe once a month I will talk to someone buying models for D&D

It's odd that you should mention WD. I glanced at a copy of the Canadaian edition today and right on the inside of the back cover there was an ad for an Epic Eldar army deal. That's the first time I've seen Epic in WD in a long time. I didn't even bother looking to see if the 'deal' was really a deal or not. WD is a rag.

Yeah, most of GW's "deals" are anything but.

I findly remember White Dwarf when it had articles about D&D, Paranoia, Star Trek, Dr. Who... fine, fine days, when the magazine was about having fun and not about increasing Tom Kirby's bonus.
