I've heard the same thing about Oriental languages. I know for one of them (Laotian? Vietnamese?) there is a particular monosyllabic word which has 5 different meanings depending on the tone used to speak it.
As for pronouncing English, it doesn't help that it's not a phonetic language. English is primarily Germanic in syntax, with heavy French influence for the vocabulary, with some Latin and Greek words thrown in for good measure. ?

I do have sympathy for people learning English, especially when they encounter the words though, through, tough and bough, all of which are pronounced differently, but look very similar.
I'm english and I get all of them mixed up.
