It seems I am back in the saddle so to speak, playing evil and chaos on Tuesday.
2700 points - but here it becomes interactive! You all get to help select the army, then one of us two will write the battle up. Its a bit like fantasy football perhaps? :)

Whats definatively coming is the Manta. I'm considering using this as the stats-as-they-are-plus-initiative 1+ version. Unless I should be trying something more radical.

But what about the other 1850 points?

I was thinking 2+ pathfinders, 2+ Hammerheads, humans etc but I realise this is just me making my standard picks on well used formations - anything else that could do with a shakedown?

Should I try some sort of tweaks FW formation, is there a consensus on what it should be?

I'd say try Crisis, Kroot, and Firewarriors in large numbers... just to give something different a try. ?Avoid pure armour formations and look at mech inf or straight inf to see how they do. ?Occasionally Tau might get caught without all their toys... and that's why the Manta is showing up, to help! ?*laugh*

I reallly don't like Kroot however (incidentally I proxy beastmen for them). If I wanted infantry CC specialists I'd take Orks!

But that's why the Tau *do* have them, to "fill the gap".  As well, with scout they make excellent pickets and area denial, etc, to protect from air assualts and teleport strikes that are an Achille's heel for the Tau.

You did imply you wanted to "try something different"...

Perhaps massed Fire Warriors skimming into battle with some Path and Stealth help and a single Crisis formation leading them...

So, you want a Demiurg do you? :p

Something I've not been seeing in many lists recently is the Tigershark + Drones, but if you're using a Manta there's not likely to be space for them...

Okay, I got nothing...

Tau Mobile Armor Force
2700 Points

Cadres:

Armoured Mobile Hunter Cadre (375)
4x Ion Hammerheads
2x Swordfish (+25)
1x Skyray (+75)

Armoured Mobile Hunter Cadre (375)
4x Ion Hammerheads
2x Swordfish (+25)
1x Skyray (+75)

Contengents:

Scorpionfish Contingent (450)
2x Scorpionfish
+ Supreme Commander (+100)

Scorpionfish Contingent (225)
1x Scorpionfish

Manta Missile Destroyer (850)
1x Manta Missile Destroyer

Gun Drone Squadron (75)
4x Heavy Gun Drones (50)

There ya go, a Tau force with one Manta, plus lots of heavy fire-power. This was something I made around the same time as my OTHER Tau army list posted on here... I doubt it'd work spectacularly, though. Any idea what kinda enemy you'll be up against? You could drop two of the Scorpionfish in exchange for a Crisis unit, Shas'el and 2 extra XV8s. Throw Networked Drones onto one of the two tank-groups.

Giving it a little thought... If you drop one of the Scorpionfish and one Armored Hunter Cadre you can replace them with 1 Crisis Cadre, with size upgrade, and 1 Pathfinder Contingent with Pathfinders upgrade. Plus throw a Shas'el into the Crisis suits, if you want something less tank-heavy (Personally I like tanks, but maybe that's just me!) You could throw the Pathfinder size-upgrade and Shas'el out, put the Crisis Cadre and Pathfinder unit onto the Manta, buy yourself a Hero, and planetfall the Manta into position. Unload everything on the drop, retain with the Pathfinders to declare a Coordinated Fire action with the others. Dunno how well it'd work, but it'd be impressive it did!

Sure, let the Marine players give you a hand as well.

I mean fair is fair, right?  :;):

Righto, here goes:

My list is supposed to be a combined arms deployment, relying on reinforcing each other in assault manuevers, and a fair ammount of speed.

- Bike Detachment - 250
    4 Bikes
    1 Attack Bike
    Chaplain.

- Land Speeder Detachment - 250
    3 Multi-Melta Speeders.
    2 Typhoon Speeders.

- Tactical Detachment 1 - 475
    Force Commander.
    Hunter.
    3 Rhinos.

- Tactical Detachment 2 - 300
    3 Rhinos.

- Whirlwind Detachment - 375
    Hunter.

- Devestator Detachment - 425
    Librarian.
    Hunter.
    2 Lascannon Razorbacks.
    Rhino.

- Terminator Detachment - 375
    4 Terminators.
    Chaplain.

- Warhound Titan - 250

Activations: 8

This list would hopefully equate to a fairly manueverable ground-based Marine force.

I have of course now given away the fact that I was planning on taking no aircraft, lol. Mind you I think that small erstwhile advantage was balanced out by the supreme lack of TK weapons in my force to have a go at that Manta with...

I always take flak in formations, consequence of playing lots of late WWII games :)

Heh. Nothing wrong with Flak. Especially since most Flak also fills other roles (WOuldn't it suck if the flak-cannons were AA ONLY?) in any case looks like a fairly nice Marines force. Reasonably mobile. The lack of any aircraft may hurt but shouldn't be too bad. It'll be interesting to see how a non-aircraft/drop-pod army functions on the field.

I have to agree, the Marine list looks fine. Should make for an interesting game.

One thing I am currious about is the reasoning behind the mixed Typhoon/Multi-Melta landspeeders. Why choose to split the group up that way? The Typhoon is largely a long-range support vehicle, while the Multi-Melta is a close-range unit for fire-support and serious punch... Seems like an odd choice to mix them.
