Quote (wraeththu @ 03 May 2006 (06:40)) | So last night I took some photos of my first Kraytonian stand and the photos were horrible. ?Below are the best two out of the bunch and you still can't really make out the paint scheme. | I think they came out better then you think. I like the one with the bases showing how you do it.

Great photo and the painting look svery nice. ?If I may ask how did you you drill the holes in the base. ?
Thanks |
With magic! ?
Ok seriously, it took a bit of thinking on this one. ?I used my dremel with the cutting kit attached. ?I made a jig for the base to fit into and be flush with the surface the dremel rested on. I set the dremel cutting bit height so it does not go all the way through the base and then cut away. ?It only takes a couple of minutes to cut the holes. ?Plus it is easier doing a lot of bases at one time. ?The base in the photo above has the holes cut free handed. ?I have one more piece (that I need to make) I am going to attach to my jig that will keep the dremel cutting in a perfect circle that is the exact diameter I want. ?So what took the longest was thinking and creating the whole thing. ?Now it is rather easy to cut the holes. ?Plus I can create any pattern I want and as few or as many holes as I want. ?If you are really interested in the insane jig I made I can take a photo of it.

By the way those stands are 1.5mm thick. You don't want to go any thinner than that if you plan to recess the figures into the base. I would suggest 1.5 - 2mm thick. If I remember correctly the epic plastic bases are 2mm thick.

You could also go with 1mm stock and use 2 layers. Drill holes in one then glue it to the other. No spiffy jigs required, just a bit more cutting and some glue.
None of that is to say I am not impressed with Audrey's setup. I actually like doing stuff like that when I have the time and equipment to do it.

And now, for the big question... how much, and do you ship to the UK?
Seriously, very nice. I must admit that I dont like building the bases up more than I have to (and with my natural ability with putty, even this is a difficult task for me). I like the idea of drilling holes to sit the bases in, but with Warmaster bases it is more difficult.
I completed another two stands last night. It just goes to show that you cant beat the grand-daddy of needle files for this! I am attempting to get the disks down to a thin height, which should then vanish when the base is flocked. But, we will see about that later.
I like the Kraytonians. What colours are they? I had decided on grey skin and purple armour for mine. I am also trying to avoid the 'studio' colour scheme - mainly to avoid comparrisons!

I had considered that, but why do something the easy way when you can make it far more complex. ?
Really I just didn't like look of two 1mm glued together when I tried it. ?The holes I drill are slightly deeper than the 1mm.

They are a mix or vallejo military and game colour. ?The armour is close to GW shadow grey (blue grey). ?Inked and then dry brushed. ?The skin color is a dark red mix with a midtone red and then highlighted with just the midtone red. ?I like the idea of them being red draconian like, just old mermories from Dragon Lance art I liked. ?Their gear is painted with Russian Uniform, sort of a light tan/green. ?Their guns are black. ?This weekend I am hoping to attempt my first camo patterns on the grav tanks which spooks me a bit. ?Sorry I can't get more accurate than that with the paints without being at home and looking at the names.

The sound of hammering and sawing (and swearing) comes from the secret hangars at Tas's VSF factorium, where the Russian 1st Dirigible Battle Squadron is under construction!
Otherwise an insane work scheudle, and Karate training prevents anything too significant from progressing. I'm in a Regional Karate tournament this Sunday too!
