I bloody hate collectables. I would have splashed loads into mechwarrior tanks and infantry (no interest in battlemechs) if they sold them out of a catalogue.

Sure the collectable nature can hook people, but has anyone done a straight comparison with a non collectable minitures line which has had the same amount of cash invested in it?

Me, now I just buy models for a new game, budgeting in the painting time/cost (if painted by someone else) and do fine.

Having fun reading through this, thanks for the reviews. incidentally - Kyromek is back? I loved that setting when it was out. So whats the story with that primarch?

Tis a fun travel game in my eyes. Good for railway journeys (doesn't work when driving mustangs).

Collectables wise I've never seen shops int he UK selling them that way. I've seen it at shows with traders doing it but they hike the prices so the content of a box can be at least twice as much as buying and taking a risk. And mechwarrior wise I only wanted what people reguarded as useless anyway :(

Ebay wise I use it for epic and that hassle enough.

Oh, and I am one of the few people to make a profit at playing magic.

Bought a complete deck in '97 to enter a tournament, came second and won 20 pounds. Bought a second deck and finished 14 pounds in the black!

Just an update on some of the posts here...

I have not yet picked up Hybrid. It will probably remain on the edge of my interest. It represents a bit of commitment with that initial outlay, and then there is the problem of where to store another box! I may end up getting it, but right now I really need to be careful what I throw money at. Getting a book that I wont use is one thing, but getting an entire set that I wont use is harder to justify to myself.

I have read most of Warlord now. I like it, but I am not as crazy about it as GTG seems to be. It is a nice system, but it seems to lack something for me. My two preferred races - Dwarves and Overlord (and Reaper are the only maker that has managed to get me interested in Dwarves with both their rules and minis, worth checking out) dont have force books, and I am not interested in the (two) races that do have them.

The system seems to be simple, with special rules and special cases making things different for the troops. I am not necessarily against this, but it does make it more difficult to get into. The magic system is also fairly simplistic, although I like the fact that spells are one-use. I will probably keep it around, and I may even get a game or two with it (I will most likely try to get a simple campaign going) but I dont think that it will ever be my 'main game for fantasy'.

Well, for a Fantasy skirmish game, I think it is one of the best out there. And remember, it is a skirmish game. I probably think Mordheim is very close, but Warlord has more minis and variety.


I agree. Warlord is so far the only fantasy skirmish game I've found on par with Chronopia ruleswise.


I do admit there is something missing, but I think that is because Reaper doesn't seem to package products like GW or Rackham. Hell, it might be the world of Taltos too.


IMO it's the world. It could use some fleshing out. And the background is where Chronopia does come out significantly ahead.

Still, the Dwarf art is the best I've seen in any game. Reaper is the only mini manufacturer out there agreeing with me about how Dwarf women should look like.  :;):

Not yet, although I have heard good things about it. It was mentioned earlier in this thread. Which version do you have?

I have to be honest and say I think G.E.V. is more suited to my taste based on what I have heard about it.

I have to say that this was one of my very first wargames and is still a favourite I dust off continually.

G.E.V. is a combined arms game for both sides, where as OGRE is a whle army against a single Cybertank.  

The rules a very simple, yet allow a large number of possibilities.

Do yourself a favour and check it out post-haste!  :D

Yep, at one point the paras attack a series of MG posts to flank a bridge defence - accross a river (very little cover). They did it, only to find the british armour refusing to advance as an 88' was up ahead.

Its hard to judge others by the same sandards you now enjoy though.  You are culturally different and are not living through the hardships they were at the time either.  It doesnt excuse sillyness, but you are exactly looking at it from the same mindset or perspective.

Do you condemn some of the Roman silly practices?  Of course not, they are historical now!  The same will eb said of Colonial European attitudes in another few centures.

The 504th PIR of the 82d ABN were called by the Germans, "the Devils in baggy pants" ... the Rgt still today goes by that ! :D   Arnhem and Galipoli were two of the battles we studied in Infantry Officer Advanced Course and Combined Arms School.  A lot of interesting things to learn about the art and science of War ...

Perhaps I should have been a bit clearer in my original post. I like Warlord, I really do. I am glad that I have it, honest!  :D

I am so close to getting Hybrid right now. I even saw an almost new copy on EBay for 25 pounds. I just have so many games to play and so many minis to paint that I know that, no matter how good it is, I wont get around to it. I dont think that this is such a problem with books, but a boxed set is much harder to store and more expensive to get.

With regards to Warlord... The card initiative thing no longer bothers me. It used to be something that I was dead set against, but I have read so many rules systems that use it that I am forced to grudgingly accept it. I must admit that the painting in the book is not bad and I like it - and the painting section is fantastic for those new to the idea.

Yes, Warlord is a skirmish game. But, saying that, the thing that I dont understand is that the whole issue of weapons is completely ignored. Not only are weapons not mentioned at all, but the stats dont mention who is armed with what - mainly because it makes no difference whether my guy has a dagger or a sword. The only factor is if it has the 'reach' ability. I expect more detail in this way from a skirmish game, I guess.

To me, Warlord is not a true skirmish game, but rather a small engagement game. This is probably more interesting to me than a true skirmish game.

I do think that it has more promise than Mordheim, and I will try to give it a go. I like the force building section, but I would like the other force books to come out. Does anyone know what the next force books will be for Warlord, and when they will arrive?

However, my two CAV Journal of Recognition books arrived today... so I may be a little distracted for a few days (yay!).

Warlord is somewhat based off of the D&D/d20 system for combat.  Essentially, there is no difference between a sword and a dagger (except for damage done), you can attack anyone within 5' of you (in groundscale).  It's similar to how an assault in 40k is a 'swirling melee' and the position of the models isn't really exact anymore.

#### that. What the hell is up with tea anyway? I drink it now and then and can't imagine making a ceremony out of it. Tea time at 4pm or whatever isn't as bad as it is in Japan where the whole process takes something like 3 hours. That is stupidity.

At any rate, we are only talking about 60 or so years ago. I think stopping for tea is absolute negligence. If I were leading men who died while some jackass was sitting back having tea time I would have shot the #######.

Amazing tales like this also get very tall over time because they are so sensational, and there are always at least (usually more) 2 sidesd to every story.

Who knows?  Maybe they had stopped for another legitimate reason, brewed up a cuppa and them somebody saw them and made the wrong assumption.

Dont believe everything you read on the face of it, especially when you are going on hearsay and a single source.
