Ok, initially I was going to build two epic armies and two bfg armies, but I've decided against that now and decided to focus on BFG.

But I have a delima.  I have enough cash to do one of the following.

1.  Build a 750pt fleet of each fleet.
-chaos, craftworld, eldar, imperial, necrons, marines, tau, tyanids, dark eldar, and orks

2.  Build a 2000pt fleet for 4 of the fleets
-chaos, imperial, orks, and eldar

I'm torn each way.  With the little fleets I can have a bunch of friends play that would like to play but are broke or significant others won't "allow" them.  LOL  Really 750 points can buy a decide fleet, sure no battleships, but I can slowly build them up with $10 here and there.

The big 2000pt fleets would give me full "fleets" complete with battleships and all that good stuff.  But the problem there is there really aren't alot of people that know how to play, so if I invite people over to play we'd probably end up playing smaller point battles for a while anyways.

Which would you guys go with?  Do you need to see my fleet lists to help with the decision?

Thanks!

I'd go for the 2K fleets.

It makes it easier to make the steps from 750->1500->2K, while you still have the four fleets to choose from.

I have early 5000pts of Ork ships! :oo
Ive never fielded them all at once but having so many ships means I have countless options to choose from :;):

So no one likes the smaller 750pt fleets idea?   ;)

That would be a good idea if you are planning on making all of them bigger in the future. I would go for fewer, bigger fleets also.

Bigger fleets. Most games you will play will be above 750 points. 1500 points works better for gothic than 40k or fantasy IMO, but 2k is still a favoured size. I would go for those. Plan ahead, ask for advise top some friend that already play BFG about what to get and all ahead full! :D

Basically, the 2k fleets are better for platying. you can still deploy smaller forces, but having the option to play a 2klk fleet is something you will fall for! :) They are great.

Health and sixes,

Xavi

Ok, you guys convinced me to do the 2000pt fleets.
But should I stick to the core four?

Orks, Imperial, Chaos, and Eldar?

Or should I also consider Tau, Necron, or Marines?
Thanks!

You should consider any fleets that ring your bell. Those will be *your* fleets, so do whatever you like. If you prefer necrons over Imperials, for example, feel free to go for them :) It is a pretty personal thing, so there you go :)

Regards,

Elmoth

Yup. Have a readthrough the rulebook and see what sort of fleet appeals most to your style of play and - just as important - your aesthetics. Since YOU will be the one spending money and time on the stuff it is a good idea to be sure you like the looks and feel of your fleet before you buy anything.

Personally I have a thing for Chaos and Imperial fleets both because of the looks but also the conversion possibilities of the plastic kits.

Cheers! :)

Go for fewer races, and bigger fleets...

..and go for what models/racial concepts you prefer, thats how I usually decide on armies or fleets for my collection. :)

What I do with and new fleet or army, is to think about it for some time, weeks in fact.

Firstly research, reading up on the races, their backgrouds, rules, fiction other poeples fleets/armies etc, and hoping something will 'reach out and grab me'.
Often I have ideas of my own for a themed force.

Once I have choosen on a possible race in then write out a crib sheet, basically a piece of scrap paper with all the thoughts and ideas I have, modelling, painting, themes, army/fleet compostion, background, characters, anything really.

After I have many ideas (usuallly a side of A4 or more) I then go throught the crib sheet and check all my ideas, see which ones are possible or not, others may at a second glance now seem silly you remove, others will be good which you keep, and may provoke further ideas.

Then comes the collecting, modelling and painting, force composition, each of which I will do using the ideas I have kept.

Thanks for the all the feedback, still trying to decide.
Narrowed it down to these five...

-Chaos
-Orks
-Imperial
-Eldar
-Necrons

I'm stretching to get all 5, but I'll probably going to have to drop one.  Really not sure which one though.

I know with the new Waagh rules, orks can participate fully in campaigns, but can eldar yet?  They've got a battleship now, and FW has released a nice looking battlestation.

Thoughts?

Id drop either the Chaos or the Imperial fleet as they are both very commonly used, so having both is a bit boring.
If you have resently bought the BFG box game remember you can convert the Imperial Cruisers into Ork Battle Kroozers, which saves some money ?:;):
But then a sizeable Ork fleet will cost you loads as Ork ships are all expensive money-wize but cheap points-wize.

But are n't Chaos & Imp fleets good to learn basic rules? If Blackphoenix wants to have small fleets for other players to use to learn game then that is important.

Also cost angle- it is quite cheap to build up big Chaos/Imp fleet if get load of plastic cruisers. They are good value for money compared to metal blisters. And easy to get cheap on ebay.

He can then go for 2 out of other 3 fleets for bit of variation in both model looks and game mechanics.

Cheers

James
