I've not played as IG much but will doing a lot soon, whenever I have faced IG I have made a point of smacking down my opponents Arty Coy ASAP as its fairly potent, I usually achieve this with teleporting Terminators or using fast attack troops (bikes, assault marines, etc). Now that the boot is on the other foot, I am looking at how to defend my Arty Coy from assaults or at least make it so its not a sure thing for my opponent. I have been considering adding a Hellhound sqn to give it some decent AP or adding some Chimera mounted Ogryns, other options (I am limited compared to some in troop selection) would be a plain ol' infantry platoon or a sqn of Leman Russ'. So any suggestions or tips on defending this fragile and expensive formation? |

I never understood making a prohibitively expensive formation more expensive in order to protect it. Given the threats to it are so precise with the direction of their assault (teleporters, air assault) they can be mostly be circumvented. Plus if your arty company's in an assault it's already lost somewhat. You're better off screening with scouts and/or supporting it with infantry companies. You get another formation out of the deal which can overwatch and lay a BM before the assault. |

Taking one step back in order to give you the answer you need instead of the answer you want, it's one of the worst BTS units going. I suggest you take the points from this: ARTILLERY COMPANY [600] 9 Basilisk And turn it into this: ARTILLERY BATTERY [250] 3 Manticores ARTILLERY BATTERY [250] 3 Manticores SENTINEL SQUADRON [100] 4 Sentinels The artillery company is too fragile to be so expensive and too expensive to be so fragile. ![]() |

I would tend to agree with Matt. While the company has great damage output, it's too much of a point sink at 3000 pts. I prefer to go with two batteries instead. |

Do people take them in 4,000 point games? |

Personally I wouldn't touch it at 3 or 4k. You can spend the points on smaller companies which give you a good damage output without being your bts. Lastly, most of the core guard units are good for taking objectives and winning you the game so I wouldn't give one up for a static artillery Co. |

For a tournament scenario I would not take an Art Comp. Other times though they are great. |

In a recent game my opponent took an IG artillery company with 9 Bask and a hydra. It lasted the set up and the first few rolls of the dice. I warped termies in and destroyed most of it in one assault. The last few fell to Tbolts. Feedback from my opponent was that even if defended he would rather split it into 3 companies |

Thanks for the replies guys, interesting reading, I tend to have to take it as a Coy rather than broken up as I need/use the support slots, and my other formations slots are usually taken. Other points to factor in are that I only have the 3 manticores, maybe if I had 6 I would be more tempted to take them as battery's, but as is my battery's would primarily be basilisks which I don't think is ideal. Something else I should have mentioned is that the arty Coy tends not to be my BTS formation this is usually my upgraded Regt HQ coy. I have little experience IG most of which comes from playing against them, my opponent almost always takes the full coy so I kinda assumed this was the done thing? To fill you in on my other options, 4 inf coys, 1 regt hq, 1 tank coy, 1 super hvy tank (which I field individually) 2 stormtrooper platoons, Hellhounds, Demolisher sqn, griffon battery, hydra, loads of ratlings/ogryns/support platoons/roughriders(bikes)/sentinels. Back to my options assuming I have to take a Coy, a scout screen appeals as I have the forces and like the idea, though would stormtrooper be a better choice over sentinels, I find sentinels very fragile and wouldn't expect one or even two sqn to be able to screen for very long. |

Rug has used an artillery company at tournaments in the past and I believe done ok? He added a Hydra and Ogryns with a Commissar. See previous threads e.g. here for more info. |

Do you have chimeras, vultures/valkaries and/or warhounds? For me looking at your models I'd take a core of a tank Co, reg hq, and mech infantry Co. In support your super heavy, scouts, some artillery, flak battery then either warhounds or vultures for mobility. But that is just me, others will have different opinions. |

I have 10 chimeras in total so enough for the regt HQ and the remainder to mech up an extra platoon or ratling/ogryns/support, I have been tempted to put a mech platoon of ogryns or a mech platoon of regular inf with the arty as a deterrent against assault by smaller enemy formations. Hadnt thought about adding a commissar! I do have some Valkyries for one of my stormtrooper platoons and 2 warhounds and a reaver, and 1 sqn of each air support, but I do prefer to avid using titans and air if possible I like the look of having tons of inf and vehicles instead |

It's worth mentioning that EpicUK scouts can stop a aerial assault by preventing a plane from landing in multiple Zones of Control. This is played differently in many/most other parts of the world and could have an impact on this discussion. |
