After years of them lurking in a cupboard I've dug my Squats back out and even purchased some additional models. Having played a few games I'm still yet to come up with an ideal list and also, really hone down the tactics and would love to hear some thoughts from the forum.

At the moment, I'm trying to put together a reasonably mobile list but still keeping some of the core thematically Squat things. Roughly, I feel that at 3k the list has to have:

Robots
Thunderfires
3-4 infantry/bezerker units (1 of which tunnels)
Bikes
Pithead
1-2 Overlords
Iron Hawks

Where I'm umming and ahing is around some of the bigger stuff. I've been using Goliath's but find them really hard to protect without sacrificing a whole unit to do so. I've used them pretty well as bait (eg as far from the Blitz as possible) but have been wondering whether a landtrain with bomb car isn't a better investment. The cyclops I've found really useful as the list doesn't have a lot of anti-titan/WE shooting (other than lots of battle cannons) so I've tended to take that over the Colossus. I'm not sure about the leviathan, in principle it's great for creating a very solid infantry unit but it is expensive and really slows the army down (as you don't just give up the rhinos on the unit you attach to but also another unit and an overlord).

Would love to hear what more experienced players think.

Just about anything on a squat list has its uses. The squat infantry is utterly crap on its own, it won´t be of much use except supporting the other units and defending objectives. If they ever get to assault someone and actually win they'll have so many losses that they«ll be useless for the rest of the game.
Robots are tougher on defense but sacrifice mobility.

Your punch comes from the Iron Egles/Hawks (on their own) and WE (with support). Bikes and Land Trains used agressively can be damn scary. But have more formations nearby to support them if they get into trouble.

I tend to load up on the WE (all of them really) as I think they are what really can do some damage in the list. I've used the Leviathan but found it usefull mostly for it's doomsday cannon. You are right, it's an expensive formation and hard to get those points back. However it let's you load up on the big guys up to the WE points limit and then add another Doomsday still. I tend to use the points elsewhere if I already have another hard BTS.

So do you think it's actually worth taking infantry at all or would you just go for Bezerkers? In which case I could squeeze in either another thunderfire or some more land train carriages.

Yes, a rhino mounted Warrior formation is tough and mobile, whilst a formation on overwatch guarding your artillery gives your opponent second thoughts about attacking it.

I tend to disagree with settra on the infantry. They are large formations that can be made larger, have decent flexibility in terms of deployment (rhinos, garrisons, pitheads, tunnelers), and are someplace between Orks and IG, both of which hold their own decently enough. The stubborn rule puts them at a disadvantage in terms of breaking, but they should rally well enough to force other players to grind against them, much like other large infantry formations.
