I've only recently got back in to gaming and was looking for some guidance on my first tournament list. I've got enough IG miniatures to run Steel Legion, Ulani Tank Legion, Air Cav or Death Korp, and want to eventually have 3K lists for all four, but for now I'd better concentrate on the Steel Legion! I was thinking something like this: Mech Inf Company + Hydra (Not sure I could get the best out of a supreme commander) Infantry Company + Hydra (Garrisons) Tank Company + Hydra Manticores Manticores Sentinels Shadowsword Thunderbolts Warhound Warhound This comes to 2700 from my workings out. Im not sure what else to do. I was thinking of dropping a few bits and either adding another mech inf company, tank company or baneblade company. Does anyone tend to use any of the larger titans? And finally, where do people tend to place thier commisars? Thanks in advance for any help! |

Well, as a quick guide, you can look at the epic-UK army liststhat have been taken in the past. Use the drop down to select the race (eg Steel Legions for the Imperial Guard), and read on . . . Placement of commissars is a much debated topic as they can go virtually anywhere except in aircraft. The main irritation for opponents is that they are Fearless, and so have to be shot. Putting them in tough armoured units is the usual norm, so that if broken they are not so easily destroyed. |

Not a bad list, although as a guard player you will find yourself needing the re-roll from the supreme commander often as your troops will keep failing to do essential things..... 3 hydras and 1 tbolt formation is a little light, air cover wise, it may be adequate but I think you'll suffer against air-assault armies, might be worth thinking of ways to get a second tbolt formation or hydra battery in there, I have a large guard army and would be happy to lend you things if you need them |

Ginger, thanks for that, hadn't seen that link before! I'll bear that in mind when deciding where to place the commissars too. Kyuss, with my 300 left I could add more thunder bolts and a hydra squadron or one of them and have a few spare for sentinels / upgrades so I'll look at doing that. Cheers for the offer! Could be handy to see what works for me. |

I'd be tempted to suggest two formations of Rough Riders or a second set of Shadowsword & Sentinal formations. Keeps it simple. |

I don't take Steel Legion without a supreme commander. It's incredibly frustrating to fail important activations, and can be equally game-changing to fail a rally too. I wouldn't say it's hard to get the utility from the SC, the dilemma is whether to save the re-roll for later in the turn if you fail an activation early on of course. A lot of the time though it will be obvious when you need to use it (i.e. you have an important activation planned). A useful rule of thumb if you still have the re-roll available when rallying is to remember to rally the most "important" formations first. If you take a SC you will have to make a choice when placing the commissar: 1. On the SC's stand (turns the SC into a fearless unit which helps you keep the re-roll) 2. On another infantry unit (gives the formation an extra leader, meaning you can go from 5 BMs to zero when rallying) |

I get that to 2950, so i think you have 50 points to play with. if you now include a Supreme Commander it will be a certainty that all the re-rolls will fail and you'll be cursing him ![]() Commissar placement, in the list you have so far there are only 7 formation that they can be attached to so it may be easier to think who doesn't need one. The 3 companies and the Shadowsword, for me are where the first 4 should go. The bigger formations will find the leader ability very handy through out the event and the Shadowsword becomes fearless and if it rallies back from broken it will clear all BM's. |
