I know these have been done a ton of times before but would appreciate feedback on below. We do not use any AC and the only WE I run up against are Eldar Titans (stupid holo field, grumble grumble). I normally use the bikes and landspeeder as Cannon fodder/distraction. The Tac Squad generally sit on my objective doing nothing as my oppenents normally throw large infantry mobs at them. My key to victory has been (for the 5-6 games I have played) to batter the enemy objectives with the vindicators etc, then teleport in termies. Worked well so far.....

if it works for you :)

I would never leave home without at least 2 thawks....and not using air you're missing out on probably the main strength of the marine list, codex marines are at their core an air assault list...

but if you win with it and have fun playing, that's what matters :)

You could try looking at the experimental lists in the compendium. 3 of those lists are not based around air assault from thunderhawks.

Because we have the no AC rule we have avoided thawks. I do Have one though so maybe should introduce it. Why do you prefer the thawk approach over teleport?

No rolling for blast markers when they arrive.
No placing them before rolling strategy ratings and then seeing the Terminators attacked before they get to activate.
It's not limited to Terminators, for example an Assault formation and Devastator formation makes for a vicious assault mix.
You can lift the transported units off the table again.

Not to mention that thawks are super versatile, battlecannons are great for long range sniping, you can drop a thawk and contest any objective, create a nasty 4xAA5+ flak bunker by landing near aircraft, plus they give you 5 AP4+ shots anywhere on the table..... thawks are awesome

...and without wanting to open up a can of worms, thawks are war engines and so can barge

which is very useful for breaking through lines of skimmer transports to get to the juicy infantry behind.... something which you may have come up against with eldar...

I am not really sure how an aircraft would barge...

Actually none of the people I play against really use skimmer/scouts to hide infantry behind. And our battles dont often involve that many assaults. They normally turn into the Eldar running from the SM, taking up defensive positions and then me dropping termies on them.

The WE transport lands directly on top of an enemy force, who move out of the way rather than being squashed . . . (so the units are moved the minimum to allow the Transport to be placed on the table, but remain in B-B with the Transport).

The Eldar are probably the most strategically flexible race in the game, while the SM are the most Tactically flexible. It sounds as though the Eldar player may not be playing to the army strengths and especially the "hit-and-run" rule to support successive assaults. Difficult to pull off but devastating when done correctly. Also Termies can be very vulnerable to sustained shooting from Rangers . . . .

Ginger - As always your advice has been great :)

I guess its more down to lack of practice (we have only done 5 or so games) and the fact that there are no experienced player up here so we are just muddling along. I have notice my opponents (who normally play IG and Eldar) do play a very 40K style gameplay which doesnt fit with EA. Which has thus far allowed me to pick them to bits everytime.

if I was an eldar player with the threat of teleporting termies, I'd likely screen my guardians with my wave serpents, that way the termies can only contact the skimmers who force FF, depriving them of 4/5 MW attacks, and they then have to face 12x4+ ff attacks back

I can't see terminators being hugely effective teleporting against eldar myself, you stand a fair chance of losing the roll and your termies being sitting ducks...

I have once lost the roll, and was lucky to have 2 squads of termies. One of which lost a unit in fire so I was very lucky with dice.

The other times I have teleported in behind units that have been left all alone with no support.

We are playing a few games this weekend so I am looking to try some new tactics. Maybe Thawk is the way forward.

at 3.5K I'd be tempted by a spacecraft, the barrage is very useful against eldar

I've also found playing very aggressively with marines is a good tactic against eldar, going in first activation, T1 and air assaulting their big formations, don't let them get nightwings on CAP if possible!!

I have never considered spacecraft tbh. I dont like the idea of pre-defining a bombardment zone and drop zone. Too big a risk that you could hit nothiing at all!

Do plantefall drop pods all have to land in the same designated zone? Or could you designate several locations?

each formation can have it's own dropzone

bear in mind the barrage is two big pie-plate templates, chances of missing entirely are relatively slim, and the psychological impact is incredibly useful and can really force your opponent to overthink it (or forget)

You could even force corners which shrinks their deployment zone down and hit the shorter edge, you can cover about half that zone with templates

I like podding in a dev formation with 2 dreads, great for mopping up or breaking formations hit by the barrage..... there are many tactics you can use with drop pods and I'm just scratching the surface myself!

edit: and if podding stuff in, don't forget the excellent deathwinds!
