Post subject:  Black Legion or Red Corsairs?

I've been poring over the army lists and trying to figure out the "theme" of each one.

Correct me if I am wrong, but -

Black Legion feels like an army that is supposed to foot slog with those huge Retinue + Cult Troop formations, garrison, and camp objectives... maybe win on TSNP, Defend the Flag, and CTS objectives. All with the support of some WE.

Red Corsairs feel like... what? Space Marines light? It feels kind of like a droppy list, with smaller formations and access to Thunderhawks. Am I reading this right? It feels slightly unfocused as a list, but perhaps that's the point. I do like the flexibility.

I already have Astartes, so would like an army that "feels" different. Black Legion seems to fit this bill, but the Red Corsairs list just seems better.

I just got my Chaos Horde sprues in and am about to start making some decisions on basing and painting depending on which list I decide to go with. Any advice?

Here is sort of what I was thinking of with Black Legion as a starting list based on the models I have

Retinue (Khorne)
Demonic Pact
Khorne Berserkers

Retinue (Slaanesh)
Demonic Pact
Noise Marines

Retinue (Undivided)

Terminators x 6 (Khorne)
Demonic Pact

Raptors x 8
Demonic Pact

Decimators x 2

Armored Company Land Raiders x 6

Demon Pool x 8

base and paint as you wish - you can always run the same army under more than one ruleset.

red corsairs was supposed to be a 'modern / 4-5Ed' Chaos marine list.

+1

I'm not familar enough with the RC list to offer meaningfull advice on it sorry. Try searching for 'Red Corsairs' as a search term maybe and see if you can find others lists/thoughts to help? Ditto to the Black Legion, but you could also take a look at the lists people take on the Epic-Uk site (the Epic-UK list is only very slightly different).

A CSM army with Thunderhawks can double as a late Heresy traitor legion after the mutations have set in too, so you play Epic30k with them too.

I have never played with chaos neither but was comparing those two lists as well. I am really attracted by the red corsairs in some points, as the list is very flexible with running more specialized chaos cult formations such as hell knights etc. Furthermore I like the option to get larger formations of Defilers, as they brake otherwise far too easy.
Another point for the red corsair list is the option to get more activations in without having a lot of nonsense formations not worth the points. At least thats what I think.

I've played against both and played BL a bit.

BL works well as a drop list, especially with Terminators and a Greater Daemon. My favorite formation is 5 Terminators + Daemon Prince, Chaos Champion and Pact. Come in, summon a greater (usually Bloodthirster) and watch things die. Things a hammer. I've also seen it work well as a foot slogger or bike heavy list.

The RC I'm not as impressed with. You can do most of what I list above, but the THawk is ridiculously over priced for something that dies so quickly. I can only think of once instance where one landed and disengaged in the end phase. They usually take a BM coming, then it's just a matter of putting another BM on them with something within 15cm and it's done.
