I am trying to build a large SM army. I have a few of the old landspeeders (ten'ish) and eight or so of the new ones. Tomorrow when the glue on my ten fingers is dry I might want to put the weapons on them. That is if I find my magnifying glass (not that I have one unfortunately, those weapons are TIIIINY).. Does those small weapon pieces build both Landspeeders, Landspeeder Tornado and Landspeeder Typhoon? My main question is though: Which type is better and what should I go for. Knowing the plastic ones are "set", I guess some typhoons and Tornados would be nice? |

I think you're getting caught up a little bit in the details here ![]() Epic is about as far from WYSIWYG as it gets really..... it's nice if speeders are clearly distinguishable as the 3 different types, but generally (unless you're using a dozen formations) as long as each formation is easy to recognise, it's not a problem to say 'those are tornadoes, those are typhoons, those are regular landspeeders' unless you want to mix them up of course..... if you use the old style speeders as vanilla ones, make as many of the new style ones up as tornadoes and typhoons as you can to give you the most options |

Any thoughts though on their use and advantages respectively? |

well normal speeders give you some MW capability, but they're only 5+ shooting and FF so not super reliable, plus 15cm range, so they'll be doubling most of the time..... still MW FF is very useful and can scare some people Tornados are pretty solid, longer ranged, twice as many shots, no macro but range+volume of shooting can often make up for it Typhoons have decent range and great AP firepower, but cost more.... I think most people tend to use one in a unit so it can prep from a reasonable distance |

A standard Land Speeder is any land speeder with just a single gun (in 40k it can be a multi-melta, heavy bolter or heavy flamer) a Tornado just adds a second underslung gun (by 40k this can be an assault cannon, multi-melta, heavy bolter or heavy flamer) or a Typhoon add the missile launcher on the rear along with any top gun as above. Some people like to model their land speeder and armies armed with the abstracted weapon the epic rules give them, others with whatever they have to hand. Personally I'm aiming to have as much variety as possible of the w40k possible weapons and will recognie them by whether they have 1 or 2 weapons (I'm going to use 1mm magnets to have the underslung weapon removable on mine, making them either regular or tornado as I choose for a game). The below are probably the best combinations: 5 standard land speeders - cheap and best at FF and close range macro-weapon. 4 standard land speeder plus 1 either tempest or typhoon - to have a longer ranged weapon, to be able to attack (and often just place a blast marker) on an enemy formation, while keeping further away 5 Tornados - same 200pts cost but 2 attack each and more focussed on anti-infantry. 5 land speeder typhoons - good if using the epic UK SM list, as the upgrade is only 10pt (I argued this should be trialed in the Net-EA Space Marine list too but other change were being looked at first). Given the big missiles and two guns on the old plastic one they may well be best counting as Typhoons, leaving the other ones as regular and/or tornados. |

I love this old ad! Thought you guys might like to see it again. I love the first and second edition "lawn-chairs on a jet" versions of the Landspeeder. ![]() -Allen McCarley |
