I've got a job-lot of Space Marines very cheaply from eBay and I want to put them to the battlefield. What I have at hand: 70x Rhinos (they were REAL cheap) 13x Land Raiders 7x Land Speeder Typhoons 5x Whirlwilnds 3x Hunters 5x Space Marine Commanders stands 4x Space Marine Chaplains stands 19x Space Marine Tactical stands 32x Space Marine Devastator stands I want to build a force out of this with a few additional small purchases from either eBay or GW. Here is my initial list for the Imperial Fists (using latest GW army lists for Codex Astrates Space Marines). Incompertus, 3,000pts Codex Astrates Space Marines ================================================== Tactical Detachment 475pts Supreme Commander; 6x Tactical; 4x Rhino; 1x Hunter Land Speeders 325pts 5x Land Speeders Typhoons Assault Detachment 175pts 4x Assault Scout Detachment 150pts 4x Scout; 2x Rhino Whirlwind Detachment 375pts 4x Whirlwind; Hunter Devastator Detachment 300pts 4x Devastators; 2x Rhinos; 1x Dreadnoughts Devastator Detachment 300pts 4x Devastators; 2x Rhinos; 1x Dreadnoughts Devastator Detachment 300pts 4x Devastators; 2x Rhinos; 1x Dreadnoughts Devastator Detachment 300pts 4x Devastators; 2x Rhinos; 1x Dreadnoughts Thunderbolts 150pts 2x Thunderbolts Thunderbolts 150pts 2x Thunderbolts Total 11 activations. I prefer to air/space-drop my formations with dreads otherwise they never seem to get into position. I'd probably get some more scouts in there. Perhaps drop a Dev formation. People with better mastery of the meta than I can probably give more advice. I assume that your 70 rhinos are the old school plastics from 1/2 edition otherwise you scored ![]() |

I agree with Jimmyzimms, your dreadnoughts will slow the devs down too much |

So I'll probably get rid of the Dreads... |

Are the Thunderbolts from the current EA IF list? If they are they should be 175 points. |

32 Dread stands are a little excessive, but I would keep back a few (6x?) because they can be usefull in certain circumstances (and they are one of the iconic units in the game) Dreads can be used very effectively in several situations:- - Attached to Devastators (or Terminators) with one of the Hunters as a Garrisoning force. - Attached to Tacticals or Devastators for Drop-podding from a Spacecraft to give extra assult punch - Attached to Terminators in a Landing Craft for a strong assault (which can also planetfall if needed) Note I realise that you will need to get hold of Termies and THawks / Landing Craft to achieve some of these approaches (though you can 'proxy' in as appropriate). |

No army list is an isle. Army lists that might work for you, might not work for others. Also list being well suited to one gaming group might be absolutely hopless in an other gamin group. Gotten that out of the way, if I had the minis you have, that would be my list: Only concessions are the Assault Marines - but you made that as well - and playing the Landspeeders as ordinary Landspeeders instead of Typhoons. Codex Astartes / Codex Astartes 3000 Tactical Detachment 375 Supreme Commander 6xTactical 3xRhino Assault Detachment 175 4xAssault Devastator Detachment 350 4xDevastator 2xHellfire Dreadnought 2xRhino Devastator Detachment 300 4xDevastator Hellfire Dreadnought 2xRhino Devastator Detachment 250 4xDevastator 2xRhino Devastator Detachment 325 4xDevastator Hunter 2xRhino Land Speeder Detachment 200 5xLand Speeder Land Raider Detachment 325 4xLand Raider Land Raider Detachment 325 4xLand Raider Whirlwind Detachment 375 4xWhirlwind Hunter Your original list is lacking AT firepower. The landraiders will provide this. The Whirlwind will provide AP and if needed some additional AT firepower. The Tactical protects the Supreme and you just have to have a Tactical detachment - they are Space Marine, more so than a dreadnaught or a Termie. Besides that, they are strategic elements. The Assault Detachment is not for fighting, but for last turn objective claiming or denying. The Landspeeders have multiple uses, to create crossfire situations, provide some MW, especially against low strategy rating enemies. And of course do all the other things that scouts do. The devastators are strategic elements. Devestators are split in two groups. The ones with dreadnoughts are used as garrisons or in defensive positions. If need arises they could leave the dreadnought behind, for last turn objective matters or if speed is required for other reasons. The term strategic element ist not perfect, because every formation is one. But In lack of a better word, I use the term for units that do not have a fixed purpose. Location on the table counts as much as fire or staying power. They shape the battle, define areas of defense or attack, block or open access, threaten or lure enemy formations and claim or deny objectives. Other formation do this as well, but while i.e. Landraiders go for AT targets and try to get some kill markings, the SEs will just do what has to be done for the greater good. If I could I'd replace one Devastator with a second Whirlwind detachment. And get a Predator instead of a Landraider freeing some points for an additional hunter. |
