I've searched on this site, warseer, wargamer AU, google ect but I cannot find any advise on playing Tau in Epic scale. Is there anyone who could provide some insight? Anything is better than nothing. I acquired an Epic Tau army some years ago and am finally putting it together. |

Don't let them get into base-to-base. Shooting things is good. When you decide you want to suggest improving their FF values, DON'T. These are the three basic precepts of a Tau player. ![]() |

But when you do decide that Tau FF values should be improved, know thhat you are not alone! ![]() There is the Tau Forum which might help a bit. The Battlereport forum is useful. You can see what others have taken and how it has worked (or not) for them. They are quite a different army in Epic Armageddon. It's rare to be able to shoot an opponent off the table in Epic so you will have to use your firepower well but also use the army's speed and maneuverability to keep the enemy at arms length. If they get you into unfavourable fire fights or worse into close combat, it will usually go bad for you. This is tough because so much of Epic Armageddon revolves around engagements. Look to see where the enemy is is heading. If you can set up Overwatch formations to blunt their advantage it will help lots. Skyrays are great AA and also provide a Markerlight. Expensive upgrade but almost always worth the cost. Try not to have a Hammerhead formation as your BTS. It's too small a formation to last long against artillery or teleporting attacks. Use your scout skimmers to keep teleporters away from key formations. Tau can obviously win games as they have placed well in tournaments (from memory). The first time you play someone and get the markerlights to work it will be a rude surprise for your opponent. It gives them an interesting dilemma. Do they kill the Markerlight units or the formations that are actually doing the damage. Hopefully, someone else will provide some more information/links and you'll get some games in with your Tau soon. Make sure to pass on any lessons/tactics you learn with your Tau! Cheers, Steve. |

Hi bud - I have just done the exact same thing! Am enjoying the army so far, they play differently to the Guard I am experienced with. Here are my impressions so far: Fire Warriors are great within 15, solid up to 30. I found a min sized mounted unit a tad weak so am trialling with adding a Pathfinder upgrade to both give Markerlights and bump up numbers. So far they've not sniped anyone valuable but still hoping... Crisis Suits are the deadliest thing I have used due to the Macro attack. They are quite tricky to use so lots of people put them in Orcas, I don't have one so am learning to use them the hard way. They're quite resiliant and the Combined Arms is pretty useful. Skyrays are very good. I recommend one per 1000 points as they are expensive - They are working better for me in Hammerhead formations as they are much harder to supress than if in Fire Warrior units. Hammerheads are reasonable but fragile. If you can keep the units out of trouble they are great for taking out stuff without Reinforced Armour, but not so good against the heavy stuff. The Smart Missiles give them some good utility against infantry at close range too. Stealth I have found hard to use. Having Markerlights on a teleporting unit is good, but I always seem to need to take out Vehicles and they aren't that hot at that. Thats the basic units. Lots of people use Recon formations as well, a cheap unit that can block, give Markerlights and supply some extra firepower depending on how many Pirhanas you take. Hope that helps - its more the basic stuff than wise words but it may give you a head start. |

don't forget the essential recon formations, Steve G stuck a couple in my face and then flattened half my army with seeker missiles thanks to a couple of well planned co-ordinated fire attacks in my last encounter with the Tau..... |

The most important thing to keep in mind when playing Tau in epic is to remember at all times that epic is not a killing contest. Always think about how you're going to get objectives in turn 3 not about how much damage you can cause to the enemy formations. With this objective in mind I recommend always including at least 3-4 recon formations in your lists. I have found them to be worth their weight in gold. A formation of 6 piranhas can sit in your deployment zone on O/W for 2 turns and still be able to claim or contest your opponents blitz. They're awesome. |
