Heya guys,

I recently nabbed some 40 Noise Marines and some 40 Daemonettes on ebay, so thought I would bring them together as an opposing force to my eldar.

So, I had a look through the threads in this bit of the forum and didnt find much so I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips? For example I like the idea of Decimators, but never see them in lists, why not?

I was thinking something like:

Black Legion Retinue w/ Cult Marines, Warlord, 7 Rhinos, Daemonic Pact 495
Black Legion Retinue w/ Cult Marines, 7 Rhinos, Daemonic Pact 495
8 Lesser Daemons 80

with the rest of a 3000pt list filled in with stuff to buy.

Decimators are quite good. They are always a consideration for a BL list when I make one up.

These also work well without the Rhinos as garrison formations. They do a decent job at area denial.

Garrison on OW and dare anyone to come near you. Even with the 30cm range on the Noise Marines, they are thorny and assaulting them right off is bordering on suicide. Anyone who gets within 30cm faces the prospect of either Sustain Fire from a lot of units or a daemon-reinforced assault.

Try to place them in an area where they have an "alley" of terrain, so they can jump from cover to cover to move across the board. That will allow you to move aggressively and and keep the area denial threat in strategically important locations. It can put a lot of pressure on the enemy.

Looking at the list I was thinking something like this maybe,

Black Legion Ret w/ Noisemarines, warlord 425
Black legion Ret w/ Noisemarines 425
8 Lesser Daemons 160
4 terminators w/ daemon prince, obliterator, Dpact 410 BTS
5 terminators w/ daemon prince, daemon pact 400
Swiftdeath 200
Swiftdeath 200
Decimator 225
Decimator 225
4 Raptors DPact 165
4 Raptors DPact 165

should be 3000pts.

I figure that garrisoning the marines and cult marineswill block off a fair protion of the board, then move up the decimators to support. It will take a fair amount to shift them I think. Otherwise i think the combo of 2 teleporting hard units, with the possiblity of two more (raptors and daemonettes shoudl be fairly tasty) should be decent in denying the initiaive to the enemy. Swiftdeaths are there for AA, and also to make up for the slow speed of the groundpounders.

What do people think?

Looks like you are using a very out dated list, some of those points, names and limits are wrong/illegal under the currents lists (swiftdeaths don't exist/are now hellblades, points wrong etc).

I was using the Black Legion list from the GW website, thats the game my group plays i'm afraid. Basically if it isnt on the GW website, or used to be published by GW then forget it. It does make organising games easier i suppose.

Which is a pity really, because the version of the Black Legion army list that was (temporarily) on the GW website was released half-finished, and is broken (notably overpowered).

Note that the Blacklegion army list that was published to the GW website was developed here on this discussion forum.

It's since been fixed, again, by people here on this forum.

I think the list you've built is pretty balanced using the original Black Legion list. But your termies aren't BTS unless you've priced them wrong!

Have fun gaming.

Wot, with 2 of those mega daemon prices? Yeah, totally balanced. :-)

Anyways, have fun beating up your mates. ;) ;D

I don't think 2 DPs is really going to unbalance things, even with TK assault attacks.

I'd suggest adjusting something so you don't have 2 BTS formations, like moving the Obliterator to one of the garrison formations.

I'd suggest trying to talk your friends into using the Epic-UK lists instead. They're well balanced and tested and all the dozen or so epic tournaments around the UK each year use the Epic-UK lists rather than the GW lists now. They're similar but have some under/over-powered tweaked for better balance and a few extra armies and sub-variants added.

Related to this query, I have another question.

How, except by using Forlorn Hope formations (which to me seem pretty useless without daemon support) does Black Legion get its activation count up? Most formations seem relatively large / expensive and I am struggling to get more than 9 activations or so in a 3000pt list.

Any ideas, or is that just the way the list operates?

Like certain styles of play with IG, that's just the way it operates. It doesn't need a high activation count.

Many of the activations it has are tough and will remain active until late in the game.

The flexibility of daemon summoning can keep a lot of otherwise weak formations as real tactical threats. When a normal formation is reduced to only 2-3 units, it's pretty limited in its options in the game. When that formation can summon 3-5 additional units, its utility is vastly improved.

What you see in tournament lists tends to be...

Retinues with small upgrades (decent-sized, tough, generalist formations)
War Engines (with their durability advantages)
Terminators (durable, obviously)
Larger but moderately priced support formations (balancing price and durability) or...
Small support formations with a few Daemonic Pacts scattered around and a small daemon pool
