Post subject:  Plan B: Marines

I managed to win most of a marine chapter for £30 on ebay and as it has been proving difficult to pick up the guardsmen that I want so I have moved onto plan B for the time being.

Assault detachment, Chaplin = 225

Devastator detachment = 250

Thunderhawk (transports the above) = 200

Tactical detachment, hunter, 2x vindicator = 475

Tactical detachment, hunter, supreme commander = 475 (should I attach this hunter to the predator detachment for BTS purposes?)

bike detachment = 200

landspeeder detachment = 200

Terminator detachment = 350

Landspeeder detachment = 200

Thunderbolt wing = 150

Predator destructors = 275

I have yet to play a game (and it is likely that my first actual games will be at Into the Breach) so I would like some general tactical advice. The list itself is pretty fluid, the only significant limitations are that I don't have any razorback or scouts.

Basically I was thinking of making my commanders formation a garrison, pushing forward with the large tactical formation supported by the predators, using the bikes and speeders to harass and using the thunderhawk and the terminators as a rapid reaction force. Viable (any tips would be appreciated) or doomed to failure?

Incidentally are there any decent tacticas floating around?

Avoid having 2 options for BTS whenever possible.

Where are you in the UK? Getting a warm up game would be the best way to get to grips with the list.

Proxy them as heavily armored (and brightly colored) Guardsmen.

If you want to use Steel Legion at "into the Breach" I could bring one of my guard armies for you to use over the 2 days.

hi!

the points costs for the one tactical det. with the 2 vindicators and the hunter is wrong - should be 525.

cheers,

Its fine for the EpicUK list which has seen a drop in the cost of vindicators.

I'm quite picky about the models that I use, thats why I am on plan B in the first place :)

Thanks for the offer of the steel legion but I would prefer to use my own (especially if I actually own a workable army).

I will have to see about getting some form of practice in before September though.

No pithy comments or sage wisdom regarding the list itself?

Do marines actually need a supreme commander?

Look's pretty solid for a Company based list :-) I would, however, drop those two vindicators: either adding them (and maybe even the hunter) to the predators (which I would change to Annihilators btw: good for busting Warhounds if used correctly against a lower strategy rated force you can sustain for lot's of AT as the first or second action of a turn).

Getting rid of the bikes (though it's SO nice to see an all marine list for once!) and adding a warhound of your own (275pts) wouldn't go amiss either.

Careful with the use of those 2 landspeeder formations: their short range means you have to get pretty close and try pulling off something a bit more like what I'm talking about with the predators.

TIP: add but a single razorback to a rhino equipped formation means that you get to keep all of your Rhino's AND get the razorback: it's like an 'additional' FREE RHINO!!!

The above tips might take a bit of juggling but you get the idea :-)

MoK has good advice.

And I'll say "yes, you do want a supreme commander". The reroll is often invaluable.

I just noticed that the vindicators only have a 20cm move so they are probably gone. I may see about converting some razorbacks as my ebay purchase includes loads of the old 1st edition landraiders (20+) and rhinos (50+) so I have a lot of spares, some extra AT would probably be quite handy as well. Don't you have to replace rhinos with razorbacks? That would suggest that you would have to lose at least 1 rhino (and have a minimum of 2 razorbacks).

The predators are annihilators, my marine terminology isn't all that great :)

The bikes and speeders are there mostly as I have a load of them and they seem quite useful, for harassment more than anything else but they do look quite capable for their cost. I am looking for 2 warhounds for my IG though so I may end up including one if I buy one in time.

The "ablative Razorback" is actually a common tactic which exploits the way the Space Marine Transport rule works.

Basically, the formation adds as many Rhinos as it will need in order to transport the units in the formation. If you buy one Razorback (or three, or five...), there will be a unit in the formation that can't be transported. That unit will get a Rhino. Which will leave you with one extra transport slot.

Bikes and Speeders seem pretty awesome. And are a fluffy alternative to the mediocre Assault detachment.

Vindies have 25cm move in NetEA lists (IIRC), and I suspect they do in Epic UK as well.

Yup. The only difference between EUK and NetEA Vindicators at this point is that NetEA ones have Walker (Something I prefer, it tips them over the edge from "almost worth it" to really useful, IMHO).

huh?

I thought only the Vindicator formation was reduced to 275 pts., not the upgrade for other formation. Was there an update?

cheers,
