I am currently putting together and painting my Codex Marines. I was wondering how many characters people are using (and where)? I am aiming to put together a tournament style army based around 3000 points. I have the character pack, so I can do most options, but which ones am I most likely to want? |

Chaplain, Librarian, Supreme Commander. You don't see many Captains to be honest. |

Is it acceptable (at tournaments) to have generic Chaplain/Librarian and then attach them to whatever formation? Or should I have the chaplain in terminators/assaults etc? (ditto for the librarian) |

Most have them on the stands to be honest. They only time I've really seen models next to units is for commissars. Shouldn't be a big deal though. Personally I've made one terminator magnetic so I can swap out between normal/chaplain/librarian, but that may be taking things a bit far really! |

I base mine separately on magnetic bases so I can swap them out. I use Chaplains for the most part (and Apothecaries and Standard Bearers as proxies), I have a Captain but have not used him that often. Haven't gotten to Librarians yet. My Supreme Commander is its own base. |

You need to slightly hollow out the 'hole' on a standard base but it does work. 1mm thick magnet of course. |

What I meant was if I was to make a unit with a chaplain, and 4 generic space marine figures. Would it be generally acceptable if that stand was swapped for an assault marine stand or terminator stand? Or is it necessary to have a chaplain plus 4 assault marines, a chaplain plus 4 terminators and a chaplain plus 4 "whatever" marines, so that the stand being replaced has the correct models. (The magnet trick is very good, but it might be stretching my modelling skills and/or wallet) PS Very nice marines there Dave ![]() |

Normally you'll need a stand with assault marines to be an assault marine character. Best bet is to use Dave's approach with single figures added to the base and if magnets are a bit OTT a small bit of blue tack would work just as well. |

If you buy the SM character pack you get the relevant characters with the right wargear for the other stands (Assault/Term/Bike). You don't really need that many and tactical/dev are interchangeable. |

Would it be generally acceptable if that stand was swapped for an assault marine stand or terminator stand? This would prove confusing if the other units in the formation were killed. You'd be left with a unit of Marines that look like Tactical Marines, but which were actually Devastators, or Assault Marines, or Terminators, or Scouts. |

It's rarely neccesary to have generic characters, since most formations lend themselves to particular characters. Assault marine will never have a librarian for example, but almost always have a chaplain. Supreme commanders are almost always found on tactical formations. Devestators usually have librarians etc. |
