Hey guys

Some of you may be aware that I am doing a Cube... I mean Necron army for Epic at the moment, as it is nearing a playable size I thought it would be a good time to start concidering A list and some tactics.

Here is a vauge look at a list...

Phalanx 225
Pariahs 60

Phalanx 225
Pariahs 60

Phalanx 225
Pariahs 60

2 monoliths
2 obilisks 275

2 monoliths
2 obilisks 275

2 monoliths
2 obilisks 275

Warbarque 300

Pylon 200

Thats about 2200

Okay so thats what I am pretty set on. Maybe dropping some pariahs? As for additions to the list I would like to add some destroyers but they just seem too expensive for what they do, any thoughts? If not possibly an armoured obilisk company seems like a good idea or I like the look of the deciever, I can see this army struggling against garrisoned infantry and as I tend to play against armies that garrison alot of infantry I think i need to be able to fight them. Other than that throwing in some spyders and a tomb complex are my other options...

Any thoughts would be great.

Overall I have no real idea on what tactics to use... Drop some monoliths down and then have necrons leap on stuff? Seems a little bit of a brittle plan.

I can imagine how to play agiant more elite forces... overwhelming them with strike forces from the liths. But how do necrons deal with thinks like mechanised companies? They seem like they will be too tough.

As you can guess I have no idea what im doing.

Your list looks like a decent start to a Necron force.

I would recommend a tomb complex, as it is very useful to have an "indestructible" portal available. Perhaps a few Immortals and/or tomb spiders to beef up one or two phalanxes would be useful.

Pylons tend to work better in pairs (as one is too easy to break and then you have no AA), so perhaps another one of those.

As for tactics, I would recommend searching the batreps forum for necron battles to see how to play them (and sometimes how not to play them).

A mech infantry company is really not the toughest target for the necrons, as you have said it's all about concentrating superior forces at the point of attack, and few armies can do that as well as Necrons. A large formation like a mech inf coy (or Ork warband etc) is best tackled by "clipping", where you FF the enemy from a position that restricts the amount of return fire they can bring to bare.

I am only including one pylon for now as I have only built one, do I urgently need to build another? The tomb complex seems like a good idea, I can definatly see the advantage of having a hard portal on the board. Also surely it would be a nice back up incase someone has your blitz?

After doing a little browsing what do you think of an 'all your eggs' style unit? A phanlanx with some pariahs, three tomb spyders, three wraiths and maybe a unit or two of immortals? The unit could cost as much as 685pts (I think), So with the plan going along the lines of landing two units with portals next to the targetted unit. Have some Destroyers bound out and lay down some fire on whatever you plan to assault, retain and assault with the Uber unit. Send the wraiths to the front line and depending on foe send in tomb spyders, lord and pariahs for MW attacks. Hopefully you will win the combat by lots then hop back into your portals for some loving spyder recovery. The unit would be a really tough BTS target and pack quite a punch in an assault.

I like the idea of this plan and the theory is a nice idea... but I am still pretty inexperienced when it comes to epic so would like to hear some opinions. I think it also helps to make up for no real titan unit... at 4k I may thumb in an Orb but the Abbatior looks unplayable.

I think your list is pretty solid. Add SC to your Warbarque for 50pts and I'd rather go for all Monolith fms. Flayed ones are seriously useful for harassment and taking out artillery co.s, plus they're pretty cheap at 225 with a Lord. I'd also suggest another Pylon if you can as one is easy to break. They're paper tigers IMO (I think I killed 1 unit in 3 games) but they're fantastic and durable fire magnets as people are petrified of them.

Once that's done, sprinkle tomb spiders among your warrior fms and you're done. Perhaps try and squeeze another warrior fm in there if you have the points.

Tactics - flank assault and teleport everything within doubling + firefight range of your enemy's deployment zone. Then double with monoliths, fire. Retain and assault with warriors, staying within 5cm of an unused portal. Stacks of FF hits, plus 9 FF5 supporting fire from the monoliths = dead enemy formation. Consolidate into unused portal and rally offboard. Rinse and repeat. Big downside - once your monoliths are down, unless they get broken and phase out, they're very limited in where they can get to, so moving around to contest objectives is very hard.
