These star rating are already silly enough as is but I read this in an email from a seller I bought something off:
Quote:

Please also leave us a star-rating (Detailed Seller Rating) for our service. If our customers don’t complete the star-rating, the Detailed Seller Rating for the transaction defaults to ‘zero’.

So, hang on... if you don't leave a DSR for a transaction - and I have never have for any of the dozens of items I've bought since because I think they're stupid and unnecessary - then I unkowingly hurt the seller? Are they real?? And you start getting penalties if even 1 of 20 people leave you a single 4 star rather than a 5? If it wasn't for the thread here I would never have had a clue about this, ergo many others won't either and won't be bothering to leave them and so lower scores and more ebay penalties come into play. Great.

eBay is vying with GW in the corporate stupidity and pissing off your users stakes these days aren't they :glare:

Unless there is something on the ebay site that speaks to the veracity of these ratings shenanigans, I take them with a grain of salt as the seller simply trying to elicit better ratings or get more detailed information.

Well, I have yet to nail down what the exact policy is, as E-bay has so far responded with either vague or completely off-topic answers. It is unfortunate that their "Contact Us" feature is extremely inefficient, and "Live Help" is unavailable in Firefox.

I also tried calling, but without an extension number, there is no way to reach an actual operator.

So all I can add is, "I don't know."

I'll keep tryin until I get a straight answer!

All I've really been able to learn about their policies regarding DSR's are;

-DSR scores can affect you placement in search results

-If your DSR average "becomes too low" Ebay will contact you about possible termination of your account.

Now, they neither explicitly state what "too low" is, nor do they say that termination is the only option. I am, however, still suspicious due to the lack of clear communication and the relative difficulty in contacting their customer service dept.

It does seem like sellers are getting shafted more and as a whole and I wouldn't be surprised if their old customer base was shrinking, but they were making more money off each sale, similar to GW's strategy and in time competing cheaper alternatives will likely grow.

A small potential saving on the other side I discovered recently though - Quidco give you 40% cashback of ebay's profit/fees they make on an auction (not the total sale amount) as cashback if you go through their link before completing and paying for an ebay win. Quidco are a (UK only?) site where you click links to others sites/stores and they give you cashback on what you buy. I've built up £50 over a few years with little effort by going through them to buy stuff I was going to buy anyway and I plan to switch to a new gas and electricity supplier shortly (with usage cost predicted savings of 15%) and if I go through Quidco before arranging it they will pay me £80

Another option would be to use the link in TRC's signature in a similar way and the monies go to supporting this site (not sure if that might be controversial to GW though? Or do they just have a problem with donate buttons?).

Cybershadow: Every time one of these threads comes up, or I just get ticked off with eBay (happens a lot), it refires my idle thoughts about running an auction section here!

I'd try using one if one could be created. I offer some stuff on the trade forums here, but other times have things that might be valuable but I have no idea how valuable and they often go on ebay.

Ebay in their brilliance has also removed any capability of seller from posting neutral or negative feedback about a buyer, the buyer can post whatever they choose however!

I had a guy recently run an auction up over $100, costing me final fees of course.  Then he refused to answer or pay, after my third attempt to contact him he politely tells me he has no intention to pay!  I cannot even leave this wonderful asset to ebay a bad rating to warn others.

This is ebay's response for this:

Quote:

Sellers can no longer leave buyers
negative or neutral Feedback.

The reason for this change is that sellers deal with payment problems by
filing Unpaid Item cases, and the fear of retaliatory Feedback was
keeping buyers from posting honest evaluations of their experiences. We
believe the changes we made to feedback will increase buyer confidence
-- and sellers' businesses.

Just to be clear - Sellers can still report a buyer who doesn't pay,
just as sellers have always done.

When buyers don't have to worry about retaliation for negative feedback
and know that feedback left for sellers is honest, the buyers will trust
sellers more -- and be more willing to buy from the sellers. Everybody
benefits.

What a load of bull!  Bad bidders is good business for ebay; they earn more from final value fees while these guys go unchecked.  Some of the non-paid auctions will be refunded but not all, so they make extra money when sellers relist an item and fail to go through teh steps to recover their loss.

Well that's just wonderful...

They've stopped responding to my questions at this point, and I was unable to get a satisfactory response. About all I could do was give them a poor rating on their customer service questionnaire.

Voice and exit fellas, voice and exit. Now, not being the most avid ebayer myself, the exit part is likely simpler for me. I just have to get that 90:s camcorder so I can digitalize father's old tapes first... Dammit, a lot of money to ebay before I go.

I sold my Ork BFG fleet to a guy in France.  He doesn't pay for priority shipping so no tracking/insurance.  He claims he never received it and files a claim with PayPal.  I show proof it was shipped (receipt and customs tracking - which only proves it was shipped); but PayPal refunds the buyer the money and still charges me the fees on the transaction!  So I am out over $200 and the miniatures.

I see reason to ever use Ebay or PayPal as a seller ever.
